ADS-C already reports position at scheduled intervals, which can be set by ATC (pretty much as you frequently as you would like). ADS-B is even better, when in range of a ground station (which are becoming more and more prevalent)

Sasha: VHF range is a couple hundred miles maximum and is line-of-sight, routes are often designed in respect to comms, navaids, etc, but it's not possible to ensure VHF coverage of all major routes, especially Oceanic.

AA-SAN is completely correct.

It doesn't matter what the flight numbers are, you can check your bags the whole way through. (Ths would be the case even if the flights were on seperate tickets)

Not sure about any others, but I know the QF/BA lounges aren't scheduled for completion until December, and the temporary lounges they're using are fairly restricted (they're not even admitting anyone flying Economy, regardless of their status.)
