Nice.. I took QR to Nairobi. I was only on narrowbody aircraft.Jump to post
I haven't gone through all these posts so I hope I am not repeating someone. CO tried IAH-JFK several times and always decided it wasn't worth it. They also flew CLE-JFK. Supposedly loads were okay but there were lots of foreign interline connections and CO got very little for flying pax to JFK to t...Jump to post
I hate to break this but Ecuador is in OPEC. In the article the author says UA should drop all oil related cities from IAH such as GIG, UIO, and CCS. I think it's very shortsighted. Fares are high to South America also.Jump to post
I don't have time right now to read and respond to the author's response. But I will in due time.
As I said, I imagine the author is a active consumer of this site. Taa Daa! I was right.
But I want to thank him for responding in this forum.
There is a lot of nonsense in this article and in this thread. Did you read his bio at the end of the story? He is an airline enthusiast and misses Northwest everyday. In other words this article could have been written by any avid reader of this site, in fact he probably reads this site and contrib...Jump to post
Wait a minute.. Didn't DL just start JFK-YHZ?Jump to post
I seem to recall that UA downgauged HKG-SIN after the merger. Supposedly there was so much protest that UA brought back the 777. That's a good sign.
UA has done so much pruning and adjusting. HKG is emerging as a survivor.
Now what about SFO-HGH? The flight is always empty.
Norwegian will be fine on DEN-LGW. No one should question this at all. I am surprised that no one mentioned that CO flew DEN-LGW nonstop for about 10 years from the 80's into the 90's.They even flew it for a short time after their DEN hub closed, while trying to decide what to do with the flight. DE...Jump to post
Wow, AA leaving JFK-SJU demonstrates a big shift in the NYC market. Although UA has the 777 on EWR-SJU, they still fill up the seats. But who knows what the fares are like? AA can't make SJU work, yet UA can't make PAP work from EWR. What an irony. Thanks for this thread enliria. In 1995 I flew from...Jump to post
I would love to have met Robert Bragg. If you do an internet search, he has been a voice for air safety over the years, having given hundreds of interviews about his experience. Sometimes pilots do survive incidents, but he seems to be the most vocal of all of them. He certainly didn't fade away. He...Jump to post
Oh really Robert Bragg has passed away? That is too bad. I believe there were also two people in the PA cockpit riding in the jump seats. They had also survived the accident. I read the reports saying that after the impact they were hanging upside in the first floor of the plane strapped into their ...Jump to post
I agree with JFKLGANYC here. But it's too bad RDU-LGA on UA didn't stick around longer just to entertain us all here. I thought they were done with ridiculous routes that were not long term projects. I guess not. UA is actually a much larger player now at LGA thanks to the merger. UA was definitely ...Jump to post
Nadavatar, you are right, even as retaliation for DL's EWR-RDU, RDU-LGA was an oddball.
Maybe UA for some reason needed to do something to sit on those frequencies from LGA, at least for a few months.
If you recall correctly UA didn't drop or reduce anything at LGA to add RDU. No one here was sure where the slots came from. I guess with the ORD build up they needed the aircraft on other routes. It makes sense. Too bad that route didn't even last a year, it was discussed at length here.Jump to post
So is UA retaining CME? Also it is interesting UA is going double daily EWR-BOG this summer. They have never been double daily as I recall. This route has been around over 20 years also.Jump to post
The Newark-ATH route is about to start. Here is another article, where Kirky discusses the importance of this route.

Turkey is a great place. I had the pleasure of taking the original Pan Am to Istanbul. Of course DL took the route over, and I flew DL on their nonstop from JFK to IST in 1997. DL had been in the market forever after they got it from PA. It was sad to see them leave. Turkey has grown in popularity w...Jump to post
I am not sure why a few here are making a big deal about SFO-STS. Short hops to feed major hubs are not so rare. These are all great adds. UA is well positioned to continue building their hubs. SFO-MUC is seasonal or not? It seems like a safe choice really. No new flights to TLV or India for the 787...Jump to post
SFO to STS. Of course people will fly it. UA has flown DEN-COS forever and forever.
EWR to SMF is an oldie but a goodie from CO days.
I have been to Kenya. I took QR. Africa is a very big continent with not a lot of service from US airlines. UA recently threw in the towel on their one and only African flight. Yes, there were currency issues but it still makes a statement. Just from casual observation, it would seem that middle eas...Jump to post
So this will have the new Polaris product?
Nice. It just further cements TLV's place in UA's route system.
UA has probably taken everything into account and have decided that the stop in AUA is the most sensible solution to the matter. I wonder if CCS the most dangerous destination in the world right now, if that can be measured.Jump to post
I doubt IAH-CCS would be axed. And UA had announced they were back up to daily. The late president Chavez had said that airlines dropping CCS would never be allowed back to Venezuela. Of course Maduro is cut from the same cloth. UA needs all the Latin American capitals in the fold. It came to me imm...Jump to post
Yes, it is true. Check the timetable at UA.com. It stops in AUA. Something was amiss.. Enliria himself posted that CCS was going daily up from 4x a week. He posted this in the same thread showing UA was dropping the 2nd planned LAX-LHR flight. They are not going daily then dropping entirely suddenly...Jump to post
Well. Didn't enliria publish one of these threads in the past few months indicating UA was going daily to CCS up from 4x a week?Jump to post
Wow that is really too bad about UA in CCS. CO was in CCS for many, many years. I think it's less about the oil than it is about the situation in Venezuela. I don't have the data at my fingertips, but other airlines have given up on CCS as well. I hope the employees there can find other work. So sad...Jump to post
UA is not going anywhere. They clearly took a measured approach. A daily flight from EWR and a weekly flight from IAH to HAV is very limited exposure. Not very large aircraft for flights that are not terribly long. It's not a big risk and they will stick around. The airlines that took this approach ...Jump to post
Good lord, what does the old Eastern have anything to do with this? I flew on them in 1986. No one was hurt when Mike Pence's plane was involved in an incident. Only a few people will really remember them. I hope EA makes it. Long live the hockey stick.Jump to post
And now, the fool's Adam Levin Weinberg is writing about UA again, criticizing their renewed interest in LAX.

I have found an interesting article about how UA is moving forward under the leadership of Oscar. Many topics are touched upon on this story. They are leaving behind being "subpar."

Over the course of the last 4 years, I have seen Syrian Air live and in person. I have seen them in RUH, JED, and DOH. In fact, I have seen them a number of times. They are definitely in business. Their livery is interesting. A year or two ago, the Syrian Air Airbus flight parked by my QR flight in ...Jump to post
I believe UA (or CO) tried EWR-TUS. No one reason to think JFK would be better on AA. Didn't B6 do TUS as well? Are they still in the market? I remember that JFK also tried JFK to IAH as well. Not relevant to TUS but still interesting.Jump to post
This is not big news. I was pretty sure RUH and DMM are nonstop. But I see we are talking about JED. The market to MNL from the Middle East is gigantic. Lots of traffic to go around. I just saw the PAL in JED not long ago actually. A stop in the UAE would be pointless.Jump to post
"Like TW focusing on the Caribbean, too little too late." Well, no. TW was dying and was losing its grip on Europe. They had no choice. UA isn't about to fold. This is good to see. UA needs to focus on areas where they can grow. They already have a footprint at LAX. There are always growth...Jump to post
Now crankyflier has picked up this news. Are they crazy or playing with fire crankyflier asks. Also crankyflier noted that any connections in ATH would not be with a single ticket. I don't mean to be a broken record. I don't think UA or DL will have a negative impact. There are plenty of customers g...Jump to post
Interesting post. United will not cancel ATH for 2017, as some here keep saying. It's as if it's given UA will cancel it all with EK on the route. If UA cancelled every competitive market they would fly virtually nowhere. Obviously the aircraft is allocated, the schedule is finalized, and tickets ar...Jump to post
Well, I would like to point out a few things. The EK flight times are not suited for connections at all. This is not a great thing for them, or maybe they don't even care. Is EK partnering with anybody or not? Are there no available gates during the evening European bank? I think there definitely wo...Jump to post
I agree with enliria. I am not sure Trump is that interested in the airline situation with middle east airlines. He ran on bringing more industrial based jobs to northern states. This summer UA is flying to ATH. After that it's anyone's guess. We'll have to wait and see. UA and DL have the advantage...Jump to post
Of course UA is going to fly to ATH this summer. It is already loaded and on sale. EK will rely mostly on local traffic anyway. During the summer there is plenty of traffic to ATH. As for 2018 that's anyone's guess.Jump to post
Wow what a pleasant surprise. When and which middle east airline was going to come to EWR was always one of the greatest hits in this forum, but we haven't seen it discussed in awhile. And the winner is EK via ATH. This route is starting on short notice it's almost unbelievable. Why did they do that...Jump to post
Well UA/CO has been serving Scotland for years and years and years, and will probably continue to do so even as more competition to North America starts. I doubt their 757 to Glasgow will suddenly start to struggle.
It seems UA is done cutting UK markets for the time being.
Well to say that there is probably enough traffic to support a flight to North America is probably not correct. Maybe there is but people don't want to pay more for a nonstop. To Europe, if DL can't make it work to JFK, and UA can't make it work to EWR, it ain't gonna work. It's pretty straightforwa...Jump to post
I agree, it's a bit corny, but it is what it is. Most people will not pay that close attention.
I guess some of the bitterness here will never fade. Sad.
Good grief, I agree. Such a trite and overwrought topic.
Great picture! I love it! Clearly UA has played an important role in the American buildup in northern Europe. They even said on the news that troops from Fort Carson Colorado have arrived in Poland. They may have been on the UA 747 that came to HAM recently as noted here.Jump to post
