Take it from a CSA, the root of all problems are connections. It is incredibly expensive for a carrier when a passenger misses a connection due to something like a mechanical problem. Then the airline is responsible for providing the passenger a hotel and giving them food vouchers.

If you don't like what an airline charges for a la carte items such as checked bags then don't fly with them! This is a free market economy, airlines are allowed to charge what they want for what services they offer. If a consumer doesn't like it then they don't have to fly with them.
