RE: Debunking The 767-400ER High Casm Myth

This is one of the weirdest threads I've read on here in a while. And I read just about every one. Please, someone start a new thread with this title: Debunking the Dassault Mercure nighttime crosswind landing safety myth Then create a list of "myths" about the Mercure's nighttime crosswind landing ...

ERJ: Burning Fuel On The Taxiway?

Hi folks, Sorry about the cryptic title. I couldn't think of a better one. A couple weeks ago, I was on a United Express ERJ 145 departing from STL for ORD about 3 PM or so. We pushed back from the gate a bit early and taxied briskly to very near the runway, and stopped. Then the engines spooled up ...

RE: DC-9: Slight "thud" When Slats Extend - Why?

Like pretty much everyone else here, I've been wondering the same for some time. It's been a few years, but the last (and only) few rides i had on a NW DC-9 were memorable in part because those slats not only made an audible thud, but also deployed so fast (much faster than anything else I've seen),...

RE: Why Do Jet Engines Stick Straight Out?

Two reasons come to mine. 1. Ground clearance: Mounting the engines forward of the wings means they can also ride pretty high. Ever since big-fan engines arrived, they've been cantilevered way out in front of the wing. The 737 is a perfect example. Originally designed with low bypass, small diameter...

Topics about passengers experiencing dramatic takeoffs appear weekly on this thread. In my experience as a passenger, FADEC equipped engines can spool from idle or a low "stabilizing"...

RE: Turbojet Sizes In Turbofans?

I think what you mean by "turbojet engine" in your post is the "core" of the turboFAN engine. Both the JT8D on the DC-9 and the CF34 on the E-190 are turbofan engines, but the difference, as you noticed, is the bypass ratio. So while I'm no aero-engine engineer, I'm fairly certain that the JT8D's co...

RE: Identify This! 3.0

Question: what measures are in place to prevent people from posting their answers on the thread? There's bound to be a few fools who do so, and whose answers stay up for hours before being reported and deleted. Have you made a special arrangement with the mods, or are you relying everyone's vigilance?
