This is just for tracking. It is of no help if you actually lose the luggage, except that you can now follow the loss in real time.

And you can also have trust in the traditions of certain airlines (BA comes to mind). They will continue to serve you with the regularly scheduled luggage losses.

No. Its not excessive. Its what makes the A380 wings so great to look at. I'm sure there are plenty of technical reasons, but for me the wing has become a distinctive feature of A380, just like the hump was for 747.
