Nowhere would have closed, least not Heathrow. Capacity is needed everywhere in the south east so everywhere fills up now, even Southend is building itself up. When Stansted opened, it was dead for years. Then the LCC boom came, together with fast growth from the world economy and the rest is history.

I also flew G-ISLC last year, didn't even know it had a toilet - you are meant to feel very awkward if you even stand up during the flight on a J32!!

Hard to see it being sustained for another 2 years with loads like that. If the article implies they were hoping for more O&D passengers then they should advertise more - however they did originally make a very big case that the venture was mainly for connecting pax onto the long haul services.
