One would think that a very easy solution to this problem is to have the greeting F/A at the aircraft door check the boarding pass. We are required to do it at QF; yet i've never seen it done in the USA.

The use of GPS devices onboard would vary from country to country i'm sure.
In Australia, it is allowed, but this is a very new development; so F/As may still ask you to switch them off, if this is the case, you must comply with their instructions regardless.
