It makes sense. A380 is available very soon which is what they need. They have an immediate need to retire some 747s and the used A340s and some new A380s will give them the fastest turnaround. They aren't emirates though and there is no need for 100 of them.

I think they would have turned the DC-10 into a larger than 777 Twin. It's certainly feasible and there was not a need for the tail mounted engine at which point you could redesign and stretch the frame.
