Usually during the AFL Grand Final held in Melbourne, flights non-stop between Perth and Melbourne are so expensive that it is often cheaper to fly PER-SIN-MEL and v.v. Several friends and family have taken this routing over time.

I think you just found an expensive flight. I'm based in TYO, and whenever I've needed to go to Thailand, fares have never been that high. They are usually the same as NH or JL at about $600 rtn.

LH also used to operate daily FRA-BKK, continuing on alternate days BKK-SGN or BKK-KUL. There are still quite a lot around SE Asia as well. KL KUL-CGK and SIN-DPS, ET and MK on SIN-KUL, CX BKK-SIN, soon EK on SIN-PEN. There's also BR on BKK-LHR/VIE/AMS too. Just off the top of my head.

I'm guessing it's Kingston, Jamaica. You could be right. After looking at the distance I found on travelmath.com, KIN is 9985km which is closest to what TK posted in that video. Even if you chose not to fly EK or ME3 (overflying Iraq), the EU carriers will over fly Afghanistan. Neither Iraq or Afghanistan are dangerous, so take your pick.

HKG doesn't make much sense, but the advantage of SIN (or HKG) over somewhere like DEL, which would be the most direct route, is that MEL (or BNE or SYD) originating pax could be rebooked via the intermediate point so it is still only one-stop. I'm not sure what the impact would be on the crew duty...

My guess would be crew rest. Cheaper to park an aircraft in DAM for 24 hours than 12ish crew in a hotel for a week.

Yeap you'll be fine. Last week I had an international two hour transfer with gates at opposite ends of the terminal, at peak AM bank, and made it with enough spare time. Prepare for a security check though.

All these Narita to Haneda moves seem like a sequel we have seen before in another island nation, the UK. Back in 2008 when Heathrow was opened many existing Gatwick flights went to Heathrow.
