They're concerned the price will get out of hand and they won't be able to afford the plane. That's completely understandable. It's interesting that Lockheed states the U.S. government determines the price per plane that Japan will pay.

It's hard to imagine the airline not needing the 747 but I suppose their business model now centers on the 777/A380 combination. I have to wonder if, some time down the road, they won't find they could use the 748i; that the 747 still fills a particular nitch for them.

Is the 787 even in the same league as the 777? I can't fathom even a stretched 787 being able to compare with the 773, though it appears the A350 is designed to compete directly with the 773. Just my two cents worth.

I find it interesting the Air Force now has excess airlift capability. With Strategic Airlift capability an absolute must, as opposed to what the Air Force required in the 1950s and early '60s, it's hard to fathom having too much capability. From a logistics point of view, doesn't it make more sense for them to buy from Airbus? The company is in their own back yard. And given that the RAF is also using the Airbus tanker, there's a force commonality factor to consider as well. Just my two cents worth.

What an airline says today may not match its requirements in the future. For the 748i, I'd suggest just watch to see what happens. I wouldn't be too quick to count it out. While I'm not sure about further sales of the 747-8i, I have a feeling we haven't come close to seeing the last of the 747-8F sales. Air freight doesn't appear to be diminishing. More 748F sales are probably very likely.

If we're going to speculate, I have a feeling the F-35 will prove to be the most automated warplane built, up to the present. Given all that it's supposed to be able to do, the pilot will need all the automation he can get to help reduce the workload.
