The original word from the cockpit was that it was a nationwide outage and no one could get flight plans. They had no idea when the issue would be fixed. At one point they said they saw it coming back up but it failed again.

The first time I ever saw an A340 was Lufthansa at Atlanta. I believe it was in 1995 or 1996. I remember it taking off thinking it was a 747-400 but when it turned I didn't notice a hump. I had no idea what it was until about a year later!
