RE: Pre-screening - Angad84

Thanks for the input DL. I've shifted the bird a little higher and done some selective sharpening around the nose. Also cropped in a bit closer. http://i6.minus.com/i5AkNF6uRNYIK.jpg ...

Pre-screening - Angad84

Just thought I'd take a leaf from some others here and stick to one thread for my pictures. Mods, please feel free to close the other three that are still open. Anyway, I thought I'd start with this one: http://i1.minus.com/irdrCY4TAAm1...

RE: What Causes The Halo Effect?

If you're looking for halos (and I assume the screeners are!) then they're pretty visible on this shot, even without equalizing. As for what causes them - sharpening works by adjusting contrast at the pixel level. Therefore, at high-contrast edges (such as black tyres against light blue sky) the sha...

RE: Pre-screening, General

Ehm. I posted this topic *after* the images were in the queue. So pre-screening, but post-upload. A bit thick, I will admit. It was only after uploading the two shots that I began to have second thoughts about this one. EDIT: And I didn't realize one could pull images from the queue. I feel like I s...

The QF A332 is a great shot. I don't know if it would make it past screening because the background is pretty blown, but it looks fantastic to me. Love the stark white (and clean!) fuselage, and the clear colours, contrast etc. Might as well give it a go...

I think it needs a little more sharpening and contrast. But then, as you say, you could push the underbody into the "too dark" rejection area.

RE: Rejected, Could It Be Fixed? Drew1997

Your shutter speed seems a shade too low. 1/400 will freeze motion "adequately" but when you're shooting an approach or departure at an angle, shutter speeds slower than 1/640 or 1/800 will create a single plane of sharpness, and everything else will be rotated slightly around that plane. This is wh...

Ok Dana, I'll apply a little more sharpening and put it in the queue once my current pair have been screened. As always, many thanks, and I hope you have had a good start to the new year.

RE: Post Screening - Distance/level/grain

Thanks Dana.

I'm always wary of sharpening-induced grain, so I undershoot acceptable sharpness too often.

Is this better, or should I downsize to ~1024px wide?

Still looks a bit yellow to me.

Not sure about the motive - it's certainly quite cluttered with ground equipment.

Thanks Chris. I've now rotated it so that the horizontal axis is parallel to the angle of the motion blur - seems best to do it that way. Not really sure what else I can use for reference! Also kicked up the contrast a notch, and cropped closer. <a href="http://i3.minus.com/ibzM57isJMK4Qw.jpg" targe...

With the B77W, you could definitely adjust the white balance toward the cooler end. Basically you want the fuselage looking white. No real opinion on the other three except to say that the one with the VS bird over the <acronym titl...

Using flickr to host images is not necesarily the best thing, because flickr applies sharpening and compression when resizing. You might want to try using myaviation or minus.com, as neither of them adjust the uploaded files in any way. Carrying on: The first and second images look generally okay to...

Pre/post Screening - Sharpening

So a few weeks ago, I had a photo rejected for being soft (my mistake, selected the wrong batch operation, skipped sharpening entirely). I can't find the rejected (soft) image any more, but here's a sharpened version - http://i1.minus....
