Re: Has There Ever Been An Attempt To Place A Large Portion Of A Terminal Underground?

I saw a design competition entry many years back that had dozens of "pod" concourses that supported 6 gates each, with all the remaining infrastructure underground to allow for as much of the space as possible to be ramp area. The conclusion at the time was that most issues were solvable, ...

Re: Where will Trump spend on Aviation Infrastructure?

While money needs to go into many airports, it isn't going to create a "visionary, transformative" infrastructure for the country, and would have limited benefit for his constituents. Same goes for high-speed rail, but you might be able to make a better case for it. Just hope it isn't *jus...

Re: IF UAL to top off WB order, 787/777/350 first?

Is there that much of a production gap now? Next year they drop to rate 7 and in 2018 with the X's inserted into the line that effectively drops to 4-4.5/month. So, they exhaust orders at the end of 2018 and the X has an EIS of 2019... It is cutting it close of course, but nothing that makes it wort...

Wasn't LAWA going to re-develop the whole south side of WW West? From an airport planning perspective, it seems much more logical to have maintenance facilities on the west side and logistics and passenger facing facilities on the east side. I guess with the APM not on Century though the south side ...

With today's eyes, it is pretty hard to imagine Boeing finding a solution that precludes an all new plane for NMA or NSA with an EIS after 2035. Airbus I could see not going all new for another 25 years though. The wildcard I can picture would be environmental regulations and electric propulsion, bu...

I doubt any incident will change the picture for twins. There are so many other failure modes beyond the engines that it would be hard to rationalize a change there.

What I could see though is New Zealand re-considering certain routes.

Well, conventional wisdom is an engine program is at least $1B R&D/certification, plus about $25M per engine. Beyond that, it really comes down to how much you want to do to the plane. Say you invested another $30M per plane to add cycles somehow and make other improvements-- with about $3-500M ...
