What Was Up With That '97 Design?

That was one godawful-looking design. However, when I first saw the new design I thought it was a special scheme for the Salt Lake city Olympics. Did Delta run a focus group on the color scheme and decide it needed a quick update?

The trend among US carriers recently has been to go to smaller gauge aircraft, even into hub cities. Only Delta seems to be using the widebodies much. ...which has been tried by two carriers - Alia Royal Jordanian and Gulf Air. Neither service survived. The carrier that succeeds will codeshare with Continental.
