I flew on two different 787s, and both times I felt like we were very close to dying. At one point we were careening through the sky at 700mph, and I felt completely out of control. So I'd say it's not safe at all.

I took my neighbors up in a C172 last weekend to do a little sightseeing, and they applauded when we landed. I'd like to think it's because I greased the landing (I did!) but I think it was more just releasing nervous energy. None of them had flown in a small plane before.

same reason they still use 707 and dc10 based platforms for refueling and are just about to "upgrade" to a 767 platform. using proven technology is more important to them than the latest and greatest.
