Re: Oregon Aviation Thread - 2018

If Alaska wants to give Portland the middle finger, I'm sure another airline would jump in. Portland is in a precarious position with Alaska. Totally dependent. Their dominance keeps other airlines from taking many chances here. Also, the fact they don’t fly to Asia or Europe has attracted Delta to...

Re: SMF Roaring Out of the Gate in 2018

I'm disappointed to see HA downgauging SMF-HNL to the A321. I flew on the inaugural flight, 7 June 2002, and it was great. Luau party in the boarding lounge, Hawaiian blessing of the plane, and, for once, heading West out of SMF, no connection over SFO or LAX, and on a 763. Water cannon salute. Lei...

Don’t forget Palo Alto, Fremont, Milpitas and maybe even Pleasanton, all of which are as close or closer to SJC than SFO. SJC is also easier to get into. As an aside, I wonder if the issue with SJC is that the upper management at tech firms live to the north of San Jose proper. For those people SFO might not be that bad. It'll be interesting to see if AS sticks around at OAK. They have thus far shown zero interest in competing with WN there, so wouldn't be entirely surprising to see if they shifted Hawaii capacity to SFO. On the other hand, OAK is the 4th largest airport in the state, in the metro area they are targ...

Rumor now is that AS may focus elsewhere in the LA basin and may not go back to LGB after all. I would not expect to see AS re-enter the LGB market while they are still occupied with the merger. We will see if it works, but even if WN gets majority of the 11 slots. let's say they can do 15 flights a day split between OAK/SMF/LAS, that still leads to a very weak schedule compared to their presence in every other airport. And SNA will still attract the higher yielding crowd. I don't see LGB ...

For SFO/OAK with constraints of the bay, a sterile tunnel under the bay would be ideal, of course cost would be ridiculous, but compared to a new distant airport, probably not.
