Re: MHT Struggling

1) The Providence MSA is nearly 4x larger than that of MHT Yes, I see that PVD is ~1.62m and Manchester-Nashua is ~400k. But I'm curious as to why the PVD number counts some of Massachusetts while the MHT number doesn't? The Metro Boston area includes 5 counties in Massachusetts (Norfolk, Suffolk. ...

Re: What's up at ROC--No United Mainline?

UA seems to have trimmed capacity to several northeastern cities. I agree with the posting that said UA is focusing on maximizing yields and is willing to sacrifice market share to get it (in non-strategic markets). At least ROC still has 3 departures. Some medium sized cities are down to a single E...

Will AA Expand more at ORD?

Now that PMAA and PMUS are starting to align their networks for more efficient operations, is AA likely to expand connectivity at ORD? There are a fair number of PMUS eastern locations beyond PVD and ALB (recent expansions) that could benefit from Midwest hub connectivity. DFW is a bit far (and thin...

Re: When does the new southwest schedule get released?

Lots of talk about cuts at SNA don't appear on the posted summary. Are they short lived cuts? Elsewhere, lots of shifting capacity going from Florida to other parts of the system. One of the biggest changes listed is MHT-BWI at +3. I'm surprised that market swings that much that fast, but then again...

Re: Southwest Leaving Secondary Markets?

They now need high revenue more than they need low airport costs to pay their labor bills, and you don't find that at alternate airports. Plus, at the fares they now need it makes their smallest aircraft too large for these markets. I wrestle with this concept for WN. They don't have a high profit ...

This hits close to home. Sadly it's where the industry is going and can no longer support small communities. I'm not surprised BNG is an early cut, but I thought ELM would hang on longer. I guess DL took too much of the market. And to think US/AA has a long history at these stations. I'm now watchin...

Re: How can WN grow in the Boston Area?

WN starting PVD - DCA is the first sign of expansion in the Boston area outside of BOS in years. While I think more westbound service is needed, it is great to see WN's PVD service isn't totally withering away in the shadow of its BOS growth. Maybe WN can return a little LUv to MHT soon as well.

Only rarely have I see an aircraft switch sides of the airport for take off or landing. They almost always use the runway closest to their terminal. However, the east runway is only 7000 feet long, so if a longer runway is needed the longer western runway will be used.

Re: How can WN grow in the Boston Area?

Aside from the comments on WN/B6 merging - why does Southwest HAVE to grow? They can likely eek out a few more flights, but do they need to become a significant player at BOS? Why does WN have to grow at BOS? The simple answer is that they don't. They can sit back and let others dominate a very lar...

I was thinking about this the other day. Given it has a focus city an hour away in Boston, and serves each of the largest airports in other New England states in PWM, BTV, PVD, and BDL, I can't see jetBlue having much of a reason to go to MHT besides the novelty factor of serving all six states in ...

As part of the merger they had to keep some hubs for a period of time. Time is up, PHL is just too close to JFK. Like Memphis to Atlanta. You will still have lots of flight, just not a Hub amount. Noticing a slow erosion in the number of flights AA is sending to PHL. There is room right now for more Florida service, which is where B6 would most likely start. MCO is running 95% type of loads on WN and they dropped FLL despite good loads. E190s would to MCO and FLL would be a logical start, with FLL providing connections to the Caribbean. B6 could do this without ...

If/when WN sets up at CVG, it makes sense to close DAY, and allocate enough resources for multiple flights a day to key destinations. The OP asks the wrong question. A better question: What routes or added frequencies will yield the highest ROIC for Southwest. I agree that much of Boston's WN traffic supports in coming traffic more than outgoing. B6 owns Boston. So then, why canabalize PVD and MHT to build BOS? WN owns PVD and MHT and they choose to strip them down. I also agree that adding something like PVD-IND would result in lots of empty seats, but I...

I would venture to say that several secondary airports took the biggest hits in WN's netw...
