From what I remember, until recently GRU was not severely loss making for SA, but just around the breakeven point. Sad to see SA pull out of GRU completely. Several years ago, they even had a second daily frequency on some days of the week.

To add, the recording the passenger made clearly shows the FA expressing concerns about the coronavirus with regards to the rationale behind restricting the lavs. And the sign was only in Korean. I'm onboard DL27 ATL-ICN at the moment. Full load. I noticed quite a few Mandarin speakers, so I wonder if many pax were directed from the canceled PVG flight. Who knows, they could also be Taiwanese heading to TPE. Seems like a majority of pax are wearing masks.

I never understood why UA won't start EWR-ICN. I know they code-share on JFK-ICN on OZ (Asiana). Yes there is capacity dumping with the 2x daily KE A380 and 1x daily OZ A350. It looks like the day flight is in the opposite direction, from GIG to JFK.

Either way, the flight operates for all of two months during the Southern Summer season, so it is probably geared towards leisure traffic anyways.

The 7-10am departure bank to Europe is much, much larger than the 2-3am departure bank to Europe. Having the inbound land around 5am allows for more optimal connections to more destinations.

The ICN flight is 5x per week at the moment, and will gradually increase to 7x weekly by February 2020. That might be an indicator of how the flight is performing.

I've done JFK-MUC-TXL before and it is among the easiest connections I've ever done. Just head towards passport control after arrival and there's a walkway right to the Schengen floor once you clear passport control.
