Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

Because the FCAS is planed to replace the Eurofighter in 2040 and not the Tornado. the info in your link is fro March and has been clarified in the meantime. I don't think that's been clarified. The information that's available, scattered over several articles, is contradicting. The Airbus marketin...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

Thanks for providing this additional source. One quick clarification I'd like to make is that this is Lt. Gen. Müllner speaking, not Germany (because you wrote "Germany believes..."). Müllner is known to see things differently than the ministry. CDU/CSU, FDP, and the Green Party are curre...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

Some more info available. Seems the F-35 is a benchmark for an interim and Germany believes that a future European fighter, a fifth generation plus (another term…), will not replace the Eurofighter until 2045. So on timeframes that means an IOC of 2040. What we can see though is Germany believes th...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

It is not. The French/German project would replace the EF/Rafale starting around 2035-40, the F-35 would replace the Tornado around 2025. It is. Your scenario doesn’t make sense fiscally unless the F-35 is incapable of replacing the Eurofighter in Germany in its main role. And while the Eurofighter...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

Several articles from today report that Luftwaffeninspekteur Generalleutnant Karl Müllner favors the F-35. http://www.janes.com/article/75511/germany-declares-preference-for-f-35-to-replace-tornado http://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-fighter/tornado-replacement-must-be-fifth-generation-german-...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

To clarify, I do believe that his words and actions affect military procurement decisions and it would be bad if they didn't. In this particular case, it makes it politically impossible for Germany to spend a lot of money on a US controlled product at least in the next couple of years. What I meant...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

vr773 making up tendentious scenarios about Trump does not change what is certain; no European force has the current capacity to do anything about almost anything Putin decides to do. In other words you better hope for the best until you decide to invest in deterrence. 4th Gen AC are good for airsh...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

I disagree. Trump is frankly too dump to utilize any sort of negotiation strategy in foreign policy. He says/tweets stuff to feed his shrinking base and then he may mean it or not. It doesn't really matter for this discussion. Agree wholeheartedly that trump has nothing to do with this issue. To cl...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

So here is where you use your common sense and separate the bluster of Trump with the actual policy. I am staggered that so many people take Trump literally instead of recognising that his particular brand of politics, while different and more public facing than previous US presidents, is still see...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

I don't think the F-35 sales talk in this thread is helpful - sales talk which by the way pretty much only focuses on the aircraft's stealth capabilities, acknowledges that radar systems will advance, but ignores the possibility that they might advance to a level where they could detect the F-35. It...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

I love how for some everything comes down to Trump. As for Trump and NATO, I don’t see how anyone can complain about what he has stated, it is simply in line with NATO agreements that all member nations maintain a base standard of funding. Trump has stated that NATO nations not meeting the 2% goal ...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

No 4 th gen fighter can penetrate contested airspace as well as a 5th gen fighter. The only reason not to buy F35 is politics. Germany is too competent to let this happen It would be incompetent if politics wasn't part of the equation that determines the Tornado replacement decision. ever since Sno...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

If Germany doesn't want to join the F-35 party, the F-15 and F/A-18 are their best bet for the next 15-20 years. Whether or not Nationalistic pride blinds them from doing so is another matter. There is next to nothing either F-15 or F/A-18 offer that the Eurofighter cannot. Especially looking into ...

Re: Germany Considers Tornado Replacement

4th gen ac are dead end and the German AF knows this. Merkel may not like Trump but she likes dead crews less. This sounds like Trump personally is the only one in the world who will ever be capable of building stealthy multirole combat aircrafts. I also doubt whether lack of stealth features will ...
