Less than 10 years ago I bought insurance at Narita, before flying to holiday somewhere. I did that in case I got sick or was hospitalized, although I'm pretty sure it would have paid out in case of death.

If this were adopted industry wide, it would put some airlines at disadvantage, in theory. E.g. those whose home markets serve on average taller, larger, or more fat/obese people.

My view is that the stripes are some adaptation of the the USAirways flag on the tail. Something of a compromise. No evidence for this though. I remember reading some years back how the (then) new JAL red and black 'sword' design livery still incorporated the crane to keep the traditionalist happy.
