DTW-SJU has always struggled.
In the 1990s, NW flew DC-10s DTW-SJU for cruise traffic, but it lasted just a few years.
Neither EA nor AA flew DTW-SJU nonstop when they had hubs in SJU, although EA did fly an L-1011 DTW-MIA-SJU year round in the 1970s.
It was a public charter, and not an IATA participant. No interline, all sales via its website. Airplanes operated by Contour. they never had a GDS or IATA code. Contour had just picked up LF. I guess that explains why I have never been able to find the code! Thank you for your help! After the 2016 ...
Jump to postI'm sad to see JFK-MSP get cut.
Last year, I took the sort of trip only people on this website would enjoy.
I wasn't in a rush to get from DTW to MSP, so I flew DTW-JFK-MSP. I had a long enough layover at JFK that I left the terminal to have two drinks at the TWA hotel's Constellation bar.
Of the larger markets, CVG has DL CDG (and will soon have BA LHR). STL has LH FRA. That just leaves MCI, IND, and MKE (at least who doesn’t drive down to Ohare) as the few remaining “large” markets with no TATL nonstops, who remain in the DTW cachement cone for good DTW geographical TATL connection...
Jump to postThis was mentioned in the ABQ thread, but I think it should also be mentioned here, too. Advanced Air will be adding Las Cruces-ABQ on Jan 16. Flights will operate 2x day Mon and Fri, 1x day Tues, Wed, and Thu, with no flights on Sat and Sun, using a 9 seat Beech Queen Air. The flight was made possi...
Jump to postI'd like to thank everyone for making this thread so interesting and engaging in 2022, and I hope all of you have a safe and happy 2023. Jump to postAvantis are actually quite comfortably in the range of quiet aircraft. The issue is that the noise they make is different and jarring for those used to that which more conventionally mounted aircraft produce. I can't stand airport NIMBYism. Jump to postWhy is it so hard to believe that a electrical arcing can make a tank go boom? Didn’t a 707 go down for the same reason when lightning blew up part of their wing by igniting a wing tank? One of the less remembered accidents that was caused by this was the crash of an Iranian Air Force 747 near Madr...
Jump to postUnited's GUM hub is still a small but important part of UA's network. I find it interesting that United has been sending a few FA new hires to the GUM base, right out of training. It's weird to see a UA 737 at MNL though  It's also interesting that Southern Airways Express has a small base in ...
Jump to postSome of you are shivering today due to the severe weather in the northern US, so here's an OT ferry flight story that might make you smile. Many years ago, a Swearingen Metro was making a wintertime ferry flight from west Africa to a new owner in the US. The aircraft had to stop for fuel in both Ice...
Jump to postJAL did though! DC-8 service in the 1970s. Can’t remember the route. Had another stop in the US with no local traffic rights. Definitely happened though! Tokyo-Anchorage-Miami-Sao Paulo, with DC-8-62s, and no local traffic rights at ANC or MIA. In the mid 1980s, JAL did get local traffic rights bet...
Jump to postI think the higher speed limit on I-94 is another reason air traffic to Chicago from DTW and MSP has decreased. In the 1980s, the speed limit was 55, strictly enforced. Now, it's 70, with no enforcement, which means most motorists drive at least 80. This has significantly lowered the driving time f...

Jump to postYes big jump in seats to FCO in 2023 vs 2022. The planned July 2023 schedule shows 59,148 monthly seats vs 39,897 in July 2022. But FCO is not the only European station where AA is pushing plenty of added capacity into. CDG goes from 34,348 in July 2022 to planned 49,104 in 2023. Meanwhile both LHR...
Jump to postIts kind of like in the 1990s when airport infrastructure across the country was primarily build in the 1950s-1970s and was not suited for the hub-and-spoke era. Turboprop hardstand bussing operations were cobbled together. Same thing when the RJ era boomed and everyone was cobbling together and re...
Jump to postLots of people can’t see the writing on the wall but most of these small markets, EAS or not Delta will be out of in a year or two max. The pilot shortage (brought on my the airlines themselves) will speed it up. If a city can’t support 2 or 3 76 seat aircraft it will probably loose all service. Ci...
Jump to postI wish Buddy's would open a "to go" facility at DTW, that would sell a limited selection of their most popular pizzas by the slice, along with maybe one person sized greek salads. Although there are lots of food choices at DTW, nothing compares to Buddys. At least there is National Coney I...
Jump to postMy guess about the A350 order: it will be kept on the books so UA doesn't need to pay cancellation penalties to RR. It also gives UA protection in the unlikely event that UA decides ordering 787s was a mistake.
In 15 or 20 years, when Airbus discontinues the A350, the order will just disappear.
Why on earth would they move all FIS to T2? Delta would have a conniption. 1. Thank you for this document. 2. I agree - why on earth would they move all FIS in either case? SY has an extensive international network in the winter months, and DL has an extensive international network year round. It w...
Jump to postWhat market does RJ serve out of DTW? The airline now serves AMM-DTW year round now. I wonder what country markets outside of Jordan support this flight. Jump to post-Findlay OH, with a stop on the way at Bowling Green for BG University students. Unsure in Findlay ever had DTW commercial air service historically. The October, 1964 OAG says Findlay was served 1x day each way on a Lake Central DC-3, routed YIP-TOL-FDY-CMH-CVG. The TOL-FDY flight left TOL at 11:19...
Jump to postAC announced today that next spring, they'll be increasing MSP-YYZ from 3x day to 4x day.
I'm glad AC is successful here.
It would be nice if the TSA checkpoint on the C to G connector was reopened. When I'm flying out of an A, high C, or high G gate, this checkpoint saved me at least fifteen minutes. Is this not open? Jump to postWhat other US carriers other than NW served BKK? Back then when TG served LAX, where did the flight stop over at? UA also use to serve BKK via NRT. When TG’s LAX flight wasn’t nonstop I believe it was served via ICN. In the 1980s, TG flew LAX-NRT-SEA, with an onward flight (depending on the day of ...
Jump to postA clarification about Icelandair: Icelandair is actually resuming service to DTW; DTW is not a never-before served destination for them. For a few years in the mid 1980s, FI served DTW. Their summer 1984 timetable says FI flew LUX-KEF-DTW 1x week (on Friday). FI 661 left LUX at 14:45, and KEF at 17:...
Jump to postI wonder if we would finally see nonstop service to the Galapagos Islands; seems like a popular destination for US tourists. Jump to postI could imagine depending on who gets into the superbowl, this could change. For instance if the Las Vegas Raiders make the superbowl, possible to add more LAS PHX capacity. Jump to postIs it a crew base? If so, maybe that's what the pilot meant when he was so insistent about it. Yes. AA's US mainland crew bases are DFW, LAX, SFO (closing January 2023), NY Area Airports, BOS, CLT, Washington DC Airports, and MIA. RDU and ATL are considered "satellite" crew bases for AA, ...

Jump to postI don't get the assertion that DL is now suddenly going to pack-up and abandon the CVG-CDG route simply because a new competitor, with BA is starting CVG-LHR. Jump to postWhile adding another airline to the Evans Terminal signage might make the tail-spotters happy, I will be curious what overall impact these SY additions will end up having on the DTW DL network. Jump to postI'm not a Delta Fanboy, but I don't feel MSP-KEF was added just because of FI. The two airlines target a much different market segment. Jump to postAs said in the MSP thread, Medtronic has their main facilities in Minneapolis' northern suburbs, but is headquartered in Dublin. This may be one reason DL is adding the route.
