I mean, I know design certainly can't account for everything, but this just seems like an obvious DFMEA/PFMEA item.

It's designed to detect and avoid pedestrians crossing at crosswalks.

Possible failure: what if the pedestrian is not at a crosswalk?

Taxiing aircraft will always be a crapshoot, since they are literally sitting on the ground, where the heat haze is worst.

Add in the various exhausts from some buildings between the hill and the field, and it can be difficult.

Couple possibilities: 1.) If shooting at low shutter speeds, this is a pretty common phenomenon, as the different parts of the aircraft move across the frame at different apparent speeds. 2.) Hopefully you shot RAW. Depending on how high the ISO is, I have various presets for RAW noise reduction. At ISOs up around 6400 and higher, this can be pretty significant. For Imperial Hill, times I would go are:

Summer: before 9:30 AM and after 4:30 PM
Winter: before 11 AM and after 2:30 PM

Sometimes in the winter you can shoot in the middle of the day with not-too-bad haze. But don't count on it.

Before that, it's simply up to each individual (presumably with consideration of their mental and physical shape, finances, family, etc.). But if you can swing it, and want to do it, then go for it.

Does time play a factor? Yesterday I went around 12-3, and in Feb/Nov I was there from 3-5. Absolutely. 12-3 is a horrible time to shoot at Imperial Hill, especially during the summer. 3-5 is a great time to shoot during February or November.
