ZQN is an interesting one
Jump to postI see Skytrax, which is about as reliable as GT's Airline Ratings blog, has somehow decided MEL is the 19th best airport in the world and the best airport in Australia and the Pacific. Bit of a mystery to me but it is fair to say all the major capital city airports in Australia are pretty ordinary....

Jump to postI'd say the main advantage is domestic frequencies, because say flying into Melbourne from Paris via Perth, when you get to Perth you have at least 7 flights a day to Melbourne and that is just Qantas and that is not including Jetstar. Plus you have connections to other places international airline...
Jump to postI must say the QF B738 product across the Tasman is looking pretty dated now. Has anything been said publically about what and when is likely to replace it? I doubt they would waste the A321XLR on such a short sector? It looks like Qantas will be ‘wasting’ the XLR on routes much shorter than Trans-...
Jump to postA350’s SYD/MEL/PER-LHR, SYD-JFK & not to say there won’t be other A350 routes, however these are the routes AJ quoted as initial A350 routes. That only accounts for about 8 frames though (9 if one is permanently held as an operational spare), so there must be more on their mind. I cant see thes...
Jump to postSome of the later B744s went into service at LGW after being delivered to CBG IIRC, there was a BA 747-400 subfleet of later-build aircraft which didn't have the horizontal stab fuel tanks and had lower MTOW - I think it was about 375 tonnes instead of the 396. Suspect the aircraft deployment betwe...
Jump to postThese are all very hypothetical, by the time the 35Ks arrive in 2026, who knows where the fuel price will be and what the economics of such routes will look like. The higher the fuel price climbs the less viable these routes become.
Jump to postAgreed. I'd tip that QF will concentrate primarily on SYD for Sunrise during the first tranch. MEL-LHR may possibly be 3rd or even 4th in priority on the guess that SYD-DFW may push ahead in the queue based on the larger AA hub. MEL-JFK does seem speculative at this stage too. I see the A350 on MEL...
Jump to postBased on previous posts, aren't the original 12 more or less allocated as below? SYD and MEL both getting LHR and JFK services? 2- SYD-LHR 2- SYD-JFK 2- MEL-LHR 2- MEL-JFK 2- SYD-DFW 2- MEL-DFW Nothing has been actually confirmed in schedules, however SYD has been nominated for LHR/JFK, while MEL s...

Generally speaking, it'd be desirable if there was an overarching code for both Melbourne and Sydney areas, rather than having a code that is shared for both the area and one of the airports within the area Plenty of other cities have the same issue, but Seoul, London, New York, Moscow, etc definit...
Jump to postAnd today's JQ17/18/29/30 all cancelled. There's no way QF will want the 788s back in mainline, they have the worst dispatch reliability in the QF group. I wonder why the 788s are so much worse than the 789s, given they are very similar aircraft. And the 788s aren't even that old! They are comparat...
Jump to postJQ's newest toy, A321neoLR VH-OFS, arrived at MEL this morning around 0630hrs. There are plenty of LCCs in Europe / USA which operate in extremely competitive environments and strict passenger rights ensure airlines are very responsive with delays / compensation. Jump to postAlliance has announced to the ASX that it has entered into an agreement with AerCap to acquire another 30 E190s previously operated in the US. With MESA recently announcing it was ceasing contract flying for AA, it is fair to assume that they will be the source of these aircraft. Mesa didn’t fly E1...
Jump to postWith 8 788s having a strong chance of moving from JQ to QF as the 321s arrive one would think QF wide body capacity won't be an issue It was done with the A330s prior, so there is a precedent If you look at where JQ 788s fly, most routes can be easily replaced by 321s Bali in particular has a seat ...

Jump to post319 for network is interesting!! Wonder if this is a F100 replacement? You would think so. It is a similar strategy to that adopted by QQ (cheap secondhand E90s) and VA (cheap secondhand 73Gs) to replace their F100s. Indeed and the 319 has much better runway performance which is needed for a few po...
Jump to postWorth noting that EI DUB-LHR is up to 14x daily this Summer so don’t see an appetite from EI to dilute this with an LCY service. All eggs seem to be firmly in the LHR basket now. Having said the above it would be an obvious route for Emerald. BA (IAG) have a comprehensive schedule already on DUB-LC...
Jump to postWhile London is a huge market, travel patterns seem pretty entrenched. ORK-LTN is a pretty new route for FR, only starting in 2018, it remains 6/7x weekly, the same as at launch. Jump to postThis has been clarified by Jetstar. JQ will continue to serve SGN from MEL and SYD. It is 3K which is ceasing services to SGN from SIN. 3K continues to shrink. For QF, does 3K serve any strategic purpose anymore? A token one. For perspective, I think Jetstar Japan is 3x the fleet size of what Jetst...

If in the slim (but unlikely) chance DL enters MEL from another one of their hubs, i.e SLC or SEA, it'll be out of left field but possibly be 'incentivised' on probably both ends (i.e SEA/SLC and...
Jump to postThe reason that PER-LHR may survive is because of PER origin passengers make up between 50-75% of the flight. Would that be a high enough load factor to keep the service? I doubt 50% would be, I suspect 75% would be very marginal. At those load factors it might become seasonal, depending on the yie...
Jump to postQF A330’s: QPG, which flew a couple of days ago, and Maybe EBD to come back, but I’m hearing rumours it’s too far gone too economically reactivate. Jump to postBy the end of the year. Qantas should have 4 more 380s back in service, 4 more 330s back in service and 3 brand new 789s. So that is 11 more wide bodies than they have presently. The JQ 787 schedule has absolutely zero wiggle room, meaning as soon as one aircraft goes tech (let alone two or three at once which seems to be increasingly common) it just causes absolute mayhem. I guess planes make more money in the air, but the sheer scale of constant operational failures in th...
Jump to postI notice QF43/44 SYD-DPS-SYD has been downgraded to a 738 from a A332, guessing to do this is with seat allocations on Indo services. Jump to postHas QF figured out to operate more/new routes you actually need to have more aircraft.... otherwise they are cutting one flight to start another. I used to fly this route all the time, on 737s and 717s via ASP.
The seats are the exact same as when it was flown by Jetstar, so its a jetstar experience for the price of qantas.
Flight times are pretty much as expected and not too dissimilar from SYD when you taken the slightly shorter distance of the MEL service into account though obviously the travel time saving for MEL pax is about 4 hours each way. I wonder if QF thought of doing this service without an overnight leg....
