If anything, they could buy/develop low yield tactical nuclear weapons deliverable from land-based units or from aircrafts (the sort which won't be large enough to justify a full nuclear retaliation) that can be used to deter an invasion, as any invading force would be decimated on the battlefield.

I was fortunate to experience the A310 on a single flight with Mahan Air last year. It didn't feel much different from the A300, but it was still a thrill to be able to fly in such a rare bird.
