JPEG. If the image is so wrong that requires adjustments that can only be done with RAW, then the image is too wrong to begin with imo.

Correctly exposed image will look just as beautiful in both formats.

RE: Which Canon Lens Should I Get. I'm Torn..

If I had 1400 bucks to spend, I'd try buying second-hand both 100-400 AND 24-105. If not possible, then 100-400.

24-105 is indeed very usable for shooting aircraft!

I think radius 2.0 is too much.

Skip the sharpening in Adobe Camera RAW altogether and - in Photoshop - instead of unsharp mask, try smart sharpen, radius 0.3 pix, 50% or so on the reduced size image.

That's not a good camera for plane spotting, except perhaps in rare ideal photo conditions. SLR, no question about that. The quality of the image is NOT reporesented by the number of megapixels, as you probably notice. No matter what the store says, that Fujufilm thing is NOT a good camera for planespotting. The sensor is too small and too noisy, and the lens is probably crap too. For $500 you can get a decent second-hand DSLR which will be much, much better. Any DSLR is better than any point-and-shoot.

That camera is not good for planespotting. The sensor is too small an too noisy and the glass (which you cannot change) is also not good enough. As others have said, for the same amount of money you can get, say, eos350d and ef75-300 which is far more powerful equipment.

[Edited 2011-10-13 03...

you don't have a problem with your equipment. With your lens you should be getting much sharper photos, even if lens are wide open. There's a lot of heat haze. If by "photoshop" you mean altering the foto (removing/adding elements and so on...) then no, I never do it, and it is forbidden by a.net rules.

If by "photoshop" you mean levels, sharpen, leveling, sometimes noise removal... then yes, every single photo you'll see here is photoshopped.

EF75-300 is cheap and very usable. I'd suggest that. Don't be afraid to raise the ISO when above 200 mm. Even if you get slight grain, that grain is very "benign" meaning it can be successfuly removed with noise removal software.

Buy a $10 tripod. Any camera with a tripod will make jaw droppingly good night photos.... provided that the subject doesn't move.

For moving objects, what determines the quality of the photos is much more the lens than the body, mexapixels, shmegapixels.

Set your camera to ISO400 and apperture priority (Av). Then, adjusting the aperture, aim for exposure of 1/1000s or less. Sometimes that will mean shooting with apperture wide-open, which means that the image will not be as sharp as possible, but that very slight blur is much better than motion blur...
