Aircraft Maintenance For Smaller Airlines

I have often seen for example pictures in the database of Air Jamaica aircraft in Frankfurt that obviously cannot fly directly there for lack of range etc.
My question is do they simply hop all the way paying the accompanying fees, or do they have some sort of payload for at least part of the way?

Maybe someone can clue me in. At one point in time I remember that your butt and your bag had to be onboard the same flight/aircraft. And if said "couple" wasn't, your bag was subject to removal, delaying the flight. So how come at least on domestic US flights, bags have arrived on earlier or later ...
