A smaller 757 base model would have eliminated the need to grow the 737 to fill the 727 niche. There was nothing wrong with the 737 growing into the 727's "niche." But there were problems when the 737 grew to take over part of the 757 niche. A smaller 757 could have grown into the the 757...

The 757-200 was too big to be a 737 killer. It started out as a 727-300 sized aircraft but with long and heavy landing gear designed for the eventual 757-300 stretched version.

I was misreading. The 748I had a stretched 744 upper deck. All the factory built freighters, the 200F, 400F, and 8F have the same upper deck as the 200's

The 100 was the original. The 100B had all the bug fixes and solutions to airworthiness directives built in at the factory. The 100 and 200 aircraft eventually had these fixes installed during heavy maintenance.

I like the idea of replacing the systems in the original tunnels. I like not having to go outside to connect landside between terminals plus the Marriott hotel. Houston has lots of rain and from April to October it gets pretty hot and humid.
