First feedback from the Canon service: it might have to do with the focus sensitivity which is a specific 7D feature and mainly intended for macro photography, and many users (apparently including myself) have this function activated without knowing it.

Good luck! I know how it feels, I went through something similar earlier this year when I dropped my external HDD and paid a nice amount for professional recovery. 99% of files have been rescued. So don't worry too much about loss of your data, but it may come at a price.

I've had mine recalibrated to my new camera but to be honest, I don't see much of a difference. However the lens is 7 years old and a bit worn.
