We used to fly HKG-ALA (Almaty, Kz) and flew the L888 route. The escape routes were Y1, Y2 & Y3 best I remember and you had to update them as you progressed the route.

Probably the same as what we did at my carrier. At FL180 the turn off/ inspection lights came on to aid others to see us. At 10,000 we turned on the landing lights as now you're in most GA airspace. When cleared to land the nose taxi light came on.

just youtube the old films of B-29s, B-24s and C-97 ditching. Some were done, as you say for science, and are very interesting.They are rarely as perfect as the Hudson landing. I can't imagine the 777 being much different.

We were usually flying against the tracks and were given random routes. Dispatch would file flight plans for the low altitude and then tell us to ask for higher. Usually it happened but if it didn't there was no fuel penalty to contend with.

Starlion jogged my memory. UK controllers would often give you "no speed restriction" on departure meaning you could ignore the 250 below ten or whatever their limits were. 320 out of 5,000 was a real hoot!

When I got my PPL back in 1967, a C-150 wet with an instructor was $8/hour or $5/hour solo. You could also buy $100 worth of time and get a 10% discount! we had a psychological "interview" as part of the 3 day interview process. I think it has since gone away but if a crewmember has a trend of CRM issues there have been cases of them having to go to a "charm school" before they can return to flying.

Starlionblue made a good point. Early in my career I went to North American in St. Louis for Saberliner ground school and the instructors were way more in depth than necessary. They talked about the size of bolts and the ft.lbs of torque on them. This was obviously waaay more info than a pilot neede...

we had EFVS projected on our HUD in the MD-11 and it was fantastic with smoke, fog and mod. rain. I only saw one incident where it was raining too hard for the EFVS in BOM.

it's easier to just make any edits to the route in the FMS and be done with it. Also if you're in RVSM airspace better keep the A/P engaged. If I were being vectored for an approach it would depend on work load.
