AS Starlionblue said it's done very well and I always found it as real as it can be. The only inaccuracy I ever saw was making tight turns taxiing and looking out the side window. The projection could cause a little dizziness for a split second but that's all I ever saw.

Depending on the location we would be told if ground power was available or not. If it was we didn't start the APU.

Often people think they can do it. A tragic story from a few years ago, the pilot and his family of 4 were going on a 2 hour flight to visit friends. The airport viz was 1/16th mile with fog. The tops of the fog was only about 200' so he thought he could do it. He didn't.

One of the considerations is utilisation. Some of the dedicated cargo airlines do not utilise their aircraft as extensively as a regular passenger airline does. Don’t forget the hydraulic interconnect...some airlines had it on the plumber’s panel, others had it on the overhead. Without pressure the Krueger flaps drooped; when pressure was applied they’d snap closed.... I still remember "2A off, 1B on interconnect closed" from the panel days. Nice...

I agree Starlionblue. We had a couple of special little ops specs dealing with alt. fuel but I don't think it had anything to do with us being cargo. Perhaps anyone could have gotten it.

It's a little more complicated than that. Use NRT-ANC-MEM vs. NRT-MEM as an example. If you have crew at the intermediate point you can avoid the expense of operating NRT-MEM with augmented crew. I have read that below 250kts it wasn't that outstanding but one must consider that they had to make big thrust reductions for noise abatement which isn't a fair comparison.

The MD-11F should be excluded because the OP specifically mentioned passenger aircraft. Note the wide difference between the B777-200ER and LR variants! mmo, I too had only 1 ½ years in the F/E seat and it wasn't a problem. I did have a friend who stayed in the back seat for several years out of personal necessity and when he went to F/O he did have some problems getting it all back. We were lucky huh?

I was a little disappointed that the mag compass didn't point at the mag N pole. It just wandered a little. Best I remember our FMS went from NAV to True Track to finally Track Hold. Click on my avatar and it shows how close we got.

We did it the sim all the time. V1 cut then at about 1,000' lose the other one. Dump immediately and you would fly.

True mmo. I, however, don't remember us ever turning off the anti-skid on the DC-10. Maybe some folks did. Wasn't it inhibited below a given speed anyway?

It's my understanding they had MAX brakes selected. I'm sure they were using max reverse as well. Everyone that flew there knew the problems that existed.
The reversers are only stowed when the reverse levers are stowed.

We had a more restrictive policy on CATIII approaches in that at anytime from the "feather" inbound if the viz went below CATIII mins we had to make a missed approach. I asked about it and was told they decided if it were below mins you might be hard pressed to taxi to the gate so just miss.

Starlionblue just answered that question. If there is a CATII/CATIII approach it will be on the chart or on a chart by itself.
