Chris is correct about the magnification tricking your eyes. I went from the 40D to 7D and found the files to be not as clean, however, once I was used to the magnification, the files looked a lot better in comparison.

A layer is exactly what I would do. Sharpening the same amount would be find, just use the eraser at maybe 10% and go over the cheatlines until the jaggies are gone.
