The wings must have some flexibility. If they were totaly rigid it would be more easy to break. This flexibility must be increased in big large aircrafts.

The number of engines isn't the only thing that makes an aircraft economical or not. There are a lot of other items that decide this question.

You should see the cabin crew of spanish airline "Air Plus Comet". The girls wear a red mini-skirt (real mini).
When an Air Plus arrived here in Faro, the airport almost stop working because everybody wanted to see the cabin crew.
