At previous operators, we would use sump fuel in our GPU’s and air starts. Now, sump fuel is taken away by Plant Engineering. I’ve no clue what they do with it.
Can the equipment run on it? Yes. Is it ‘safe’ to do so? I’ve no clue, I’m not a diesel mechanic.
Just a quick add-on question. For aircraft to be powered up - do you need to switch battery on, or will external power completely do the trick? Tuch the Fan? The fan needs to be just about stopped before you can get a hold of it. Too much mass there.
As for standing in front of the inlet? Almost immediately. The low pressure in front of the fan dissipates within seconds of shutdown.
