Fri Aug 13, 2004 12:33 am

2 marines killed in this incident. Add this to the UH-1 and OH-58 that have gone down in the past week.

Why don't they bring in some Apaches and torch the Iraqis with Hellfire? They did it once, they can do it again!

Silly Islamic extremists, it's just a cartoon!

Probably because the Marines don't have the Apache.

Forgot to mention, there is an S-3 missing from the Stennis off the coast of Iwo Jima. 4 crew missing there.

Probably because the Marines don't have the Apache.

Then they should use their Harriers!

How did that happen?

Enough of this losing hardware stuff. One MOAB will suffice. Bring 'em home or turn them loose.

But these losses are keeping in line with normal attrition (i.e. these are not extraordinary loses. If you check the loss rate for 100,000 hrs, i doubt this is a spike given the high level of activity in these units in a perpetual combat environment.

With the way that CH-53's where being lost the past couple of years in the states, It doesn't surprise me that more haven't crashed.

The S-3B was BuNo 160567 from VS-35 off John C. Stennis. It appears to be a CFIT incident with the aircraft striking the terrain 60ft below the top of the 1400ft ridge.

The CH-53E was from HMH-465 detachment attached to HMM-166 from our strike group. It is ironic that KiwiNandy mentions Hellfires, the aircraft was delivering a load of Hellfires to 11th MEU when it went down. The post crash fire (actually the aircraft was on fire before it crashed) caused secondary ordnance explosions which kept the wingman from approaching to conduct SAR.

HC-4 lost an MH-53E BuNo 162505. It caught fire after landing (don't know why) and the fire destroyed the aircraft before the base fire crews were able to respond and put out the fire.

A CH-53D went down in Ginowan City, Okinawa, near MCAS Futenma on a university campus. Fortunately, there are no fatalities but one of the three Marines on board is in serious condition.

That sucks...when it rains it pours I guess.

I was stationed at Futenma in 2000, I can't imagine a helicopter crashing there without someone getting seriously hurt, there's not a lot of room for error there, and it probably didn't make the Japanese to happy with us either.
