For those keeping score...
An F-18C of VF-151 overran the runway at NAS North Island last night at about 2045 local time and ended up in San Diego Bay. Pilot ejected and is okay.

Saw it as we pulled in to NZY today. To bad I only had my little digital cam with me. 
Oh and by the way... VF's are Tomcats. It was an F/A18C from VF-81. USS Abraham Lincoln.

We had Captain's Call in the hangar bay this morning and he said it was VFA-81. I dont know if he has it wrong or if the media has it wrong.

I'm a little confused here. The article said VFA-151 Vigilantes, NAS Lemoore based, but people here are saying VFA-81, the Sunliners, NAS Oceana based.
I think it's VFA-151, as this was the West Coast, and VFA-151 is attached to CVN-72, and has the modex 3XX on the side, NK on the tail, whereas VFA-81 has 4XX modex's (side numbers), and AA on the tail. VFA-81 would be a little far from home on this one, and is certainly attached to an east-coast based carrier.

Maiznblu_757, Your CO may have better gouge than the newspeople, who knows. You know how scuttlebutt goes! Will be interesting to see how it goes over there though, and if anything will be salavaged from the plane after they pull it up. Amazing it was still floating! Probably had alot of air in the fueltanks?

FYI, as to what DeltaGuy said,
NAS Oceana's VFAs does not participate in western pacific deployments. All our VFAs (sea-duty squadrons) are on Norfolk-based carriers. That is why NAS Lemoore's F/A-18s handles (sea duty, that is) ALL of the west coast carriers meaning it definatly wasn't VFA-81.
I heard about this crash on the Navy News, as our C.O. here on the Stennis didn't announce it as we've been thru some terrible losses ourselves.

This August we, VFA-106, participated in work-ups with the USS Abraham Lincoln out of North Island. We also have detached out to Nimitz and John C. Stennis in the past. Obviously, VFA-106 and VF-101 don't deploy, but we do participate in work-ups fleet-wide.

I have seen a few of VF-101s tomcats at NASNI a few times I'm there. Why? I do not know, but as what you mentioned, doing work-ups. I guess they will participate in CQs to train newly and recurring pilots on actual carrier arrestment landings but don't go on actual deployments. But I don't think shore based squadrons do dets like COMTUEX or JTFEX since usually the airwings that participates in these exercise do go on deployments.
FYI: We are the last F-14 squadron to participate in a Western Pacific deployment here on the USS John C. Stennis. After this, the air wing in the west coast will be everything 'cept for the 'cats.

BTW, we've received our first Super Hornets now. First class starts in 2005. Most of them are acceptance jets from VFA-122 in Lemoore. The boss bird is a new-build, though.
