It's very real. The EWO is just along for the ride, and just having a little fun with the 'Boomer'. Shoot, you should see some of the stuff I pull out of the cockpits of commercial airliners..!!

I bet its real. There's tons of porn mags in our cockpits. I'd be surprised if they didn't do it in the military as well.

It's real... they're military pilots, is it really that outrageous to think they of all people would (*gasp*) take a Playboy up?

Why would this be a joke? Long flight, you need reading material to keep the mind sharp and ready for action.

Boomers have seen more than magazine covers from thier perch.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

Ah, that explains all the innocent civilian victims in Iraq.. I hope they are more professional the next time. How can the government allow this, as if it's normal to read magazines during work....

I think that comment was totally uncalled for. If you know anything about attack helicopters, take a look at my forum name and you can guess my line of work.

I have worked with the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces on a number of occassions and I can tell you they are no different.

The aircrew in the US Armed Forces are highly professional individuals and in the words of Field Marshall Montgomery, morale is the greatest asset any fighting force can have. If it keeps the guy happy at work and doesn't harm operational effectiveness, let him have it.

I know, but it's just very stupid to do it in front of a camera, knowing that by now half Iraq and Afganistan is aware of this photo...

The guy in the RHS probably realised that it wasn't the best decision he ever made. Sorry if I jumped on your post but in the politically correct times we live in, its a bit of a brush fire starter.

I must add that in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, we wouldn't dream of carrying such literature Big grin Big grin

OK, I will. The Aussies have operated and still do operate the F-111 from the 82nd Wing based at RAAF Amberley and are currently the only Air Force operatins the F-111, which they'll continue to see in service until, I believe, 2010.

What he means is that it IS a real photo, including the Penthouse, but that the WSO of the F-111 was holding the copy of Penthouse as a joke. P.S., that's not a "fuel probe," that's a refuelling boom. A probe is only on probe and drogue aircraft, which the F-111 isn't.

Hhmmm, an issue of Penthouse being read by the "weapons officer", while a hard "fuel boom" is being inserted into a a fuel oriface.

Whis is IHAP suddenly feeling all warm and fuzzy.

BTW I also am of the opinion that the photo is quite real as that sunburst might be a bit tricky to line up on all the various angles in the shot.

Ha! Hardly. If they were American airmen (I don't know about the Aussies)they could get written up, but not much more unless the boom operator wants to be a dick and goes to Social Actions. Don't count on that; boom operators are usually pretty cool. Besides, on a flight long enough to require refueling they would need some kind of reading material or something to keep from going crazy with boredom.

Yep, he looks to be a captain in the RAF or maybe, as some other people have mentioned, the RAAF. I can't really tell the difference. I've worked with couple British officers (that is to say we played Halo and watched DVDs in the breakroom), but I've never had the pleasure of working with an Australian officer.

Dude, we had Maxim in our breakroom at the ANR. It's a little risque, but nothing that would get anybody in trouble. The military is mostly a bunch of guys in their twenties and thirties. What do you expect them to be reading?

The difference is mainly that the Aussies have "AUSTRALIA" on their rank insigna and the Brits have black borders to their bars. Neither the Aussies or the Brits have a rank called "captain." They do have the "group captain" rank though. The equivalent to a USAF captain would be their Flight Lieutenant rank.

OK - IHAP magnified the image for us and here's what we've got:

As you can see from the insignia, the guy's definitely not an American. The light colored bars are set too far apart to be a captain's railroad tracks. So, apologies, KL911, but you prematurely pinned this on us Yanks. Looking at this picture I found of an Australian group captain his flight suit, I think we can all see that with the two bolder bars on either side and the thinner bar in the middle, we have as our pilot an Australian squadron leader (equivalent to a Major in the USAF, USA, or USMC).
