Reports of explosions coming from an Air Force Boeing 757 leaving Whenuapai Air Base this morning have been put down to engine troubles.

The plane, carrying around 20 Defence Force staff was heading for Darwin but turned back to Auckland when the problem was detected. It made a safe emergency landing.

Whenuapai Operations Manager Squadron Leader Brett Goodall suspects a compressor malfunction, which can be caused by a abnormal airflow, bird-strike, or a fuel blockage is to blame. It results in unburned fuel entering the tail pipe, creating a fireball and a bang.

Mr Goodall says while this sort of incident is unusual, it was handled well by all the crew and the plane and passengers were never in any danger.

National's defence spokesman, John Carter says it is the eighth incident this year where an Air Force aircraft has failed in some way.

He says it is embarrassing for the country and for Defence Force personnel, adding that it is disgraceful Labour has let New Zealand's international reputation plunge so low.
