Photos From The Miramar Air Show

Mon Oct 17, 2005 2:13 pm

Hi all,

I went to the show today at Miramar and it was truly amazing. A great variety of aircraft on the ramp, great demos in the air, and cool pilots and crew to talk to as well. I shot about 400 pix, so here are just a couple I uploaded for now. I'll see what else is interesting and post later if anyone wants. Enjoy.

That's me at the controls of a Blackhawk.

Great shots...thanks for sharing. That shot of the two guys sitting on top of the C-17 is excellent. It's quite a study of perspective.

You lucky dog, I missed the F-117 flyby at the Pittsburgh airshow a few year's ago. I'll never forget it, sitting in the port-a-jon and hearing the announcer say, "and here it is, the F-117". I only wish the call of nature came after the flyby. hissyfit

You missed nothing spetacular from an enthusiasts point of view. It´s just a small black flying brick that´s can perform some fly-bys but no other aerobatics. The only impressing thing is the relative quietness of the a/c. Some years ago I saw it at Air Fete at RAF Mildenhall, England. It was standing with its engines running for warming up not more than 20 meters away and it was almost inaudible.

In case you´ve ever seen a B-2 Spirit fly-by, THATS an much better (i.e. impressing) sight.
My first sighting of a B-2 was on RIAT Fairford in England 1996. It came over from its base in the U.S. (somewhere in the south, IIRC) with its two-ship escort (F-16s, IIRC) non-stop for 3 (three) fly-bys only and returning home immediately afterwards. Undoubtedly it was the star of the show by then !

I was really amazed at how quiet the B-2 was when it did its fly-bys. You couldn't hear it from the ground. I could tell most of the crowd was shocked by the lack of sound too; everyone looking at each other scratching their heads. To the novice seeing F-18's, F-16's, B-1B's and especially F-4's fly-by you expect everything that fly's past will make your stomach rumble. Here are a few more pics...

Something I noticed at an airshow a while back.

There is always this incredibly long line to sit in the left seat of helicopters... I guess the guys sitting around telling people about the thing gave up a long time ago trying to tell people the pilot sits on the right in a helicopter. When I wanted in the pilots seat of a blackhawk a while back there was a huge line on the left side, but I just walked up and climbed in on the right, got my picture taken, and climbed out.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

CaptOveur,

Funny you mention that. I did seem many more people were waiting for the left side.

Oh man, this past weekend was nuts! I live like 2-3 miles from Miramar. The only thing separating me and Miramar is 805. For 4 days straight, I saw the practices and airshow performances. I went to the show on Saturday. The weather could have been better but I still had a great time. Funny though...my best pictures came from my house, NOT the airshow. LOL When the Blue Angels performed, they were lower, and closer to my house, than the crowds at the airshow (since they are more in front of the crowds, not on top). I got some incredible pics and video.

A few shots from my house on Thursday:

These next two were taken from my bedroom window. Haha.

Pictures don't do the experience justice. I have only lived here for 5 months and I've gotten used to the daily activity at Miramar, but man...these were SOOOOOO low...and LOUD. Reminds me of the spot I stood at Oceana for the Friday practice last month.

Haha yeah! It's actually my house though. Left it there on purpose to give perspective.  Big grin

When they have the airshow's at Pittsburgh Intl., the plane's that do the demo's fly right over my house too. I live, as the crow fly's, about a half mile from the south side of 28L/10R, so when they fly away from the crowd, they're flying toward's me.

The only pisser is, where I live is kinda hilly, so for the second you spot'em, they're gone before you can snap a shot off. gnasher
