Which One Is Louder SR-71, B-1B, F-15 Or F-22a

Sun Feb 05, 2006 8:41 am

I been thinking about some of the most ear perishing jets the USAF had in my life time. I would think the SR-71 would top the list. I herd the B-1b rocks anything that near it and eventhough I been told that the F-14 is louder, and I have a hard time believing it , I would put it as the second. I have had the pleasure of being one of the few people to see an F-22a in person, during a fly by at the 2005 Blue Angeles Homecomeing Airshow. All I can say is that I never herd a plane that was that loud and thunderous I my life, so I place it third. Even though I have not herd one at full power I been told a F-15 is pretty loud also. I just want to is a list of some of the loudest planes the USAF ever had from Loudest to lest loudest.

As far as loudest aircraft noise I've heard, it is by far the Harrier during a hover.

A close second is the B-1 in full afterburner.

The fighters, such as the F-14 and 15, are not nearly as loud as those, though they are loud. I too have seen the F-22 fly in person, but they were at maybe 1,500' and slow speed, so they were extremely quiet. I didn't hear them pour the coals on.

I never heard the Blackbird, unfortunately, but I would guess it would beat all but the AV-8B hovering for sound. Sad I won't ever know.

B-1 gets my vote, although I have not seen the F-22 yet or a SR-71. Saw B-1s several times at shows, really leaves you amazed. Have seen F-14's alot closer than B-1s, but nowhere near as loud. There are several videos out there that you can get a good idea about B-1 noise levels. I will try to find one. The bone can literally shake the ground..

I don't know if it was the cold, or just the fact that it was 0300, but I remember being at Ellsworth and Minot when some B-1's were doing some pattern work, touch-and-go's, and transitions. So loud I thought the fillings in my teeth were going to rattle out of my mouth.
Haven't heard anything like that except for maybe the time I was 2nd row from the stage at a Ted Nugent concert back in the 70's.

My vote for loudest jet would be a toss-up between the Harrier and the T-37.

I was fortunate enough to see an SR-71 depart from Wright-Patterson. I couldn't turn my head fast enough! The crew was definietly riding the rocket.

Loudest chopper, the Mi-24 wins rotors-down! It doesn't sound like a chopper

The B-1B is loud, but nothing compares to the SR-71's J-58's in AB. .

Definitely the SR-71. I've heard the BONE rock the dorms at mcguire a few years ago, and at Diego. The harrier at a few airshows. And the F-22 at Edwards, Nellis and a few other places. But I still think the sled takes the cake

Well I haven't yet seen every aircraft fly, but the F-22a's I saw doing touch and goes at Nellis were pretty loud. Also, the B-1 and a couple B-52 that came in for a landing right over where I was at Tinker were amazingly loud also. Probably, the B-1 was the loudest from what I can remember.

I was visiting my B-1 WSO buddy at Dyess AFB and while the B1s there were load there was a Tweet that was in the area (why Dyess I don't know) doing some pattern work and that thing was amazing load.

I was out on the ramp with my friend taking a look at some of the a/c and was there for when the Star of Abilene taxied in after its last flight. I was out there without any real good ear protection and I can tell you that even at taxi that bird was loud.

Side note, if you don't know the Star of Abilene was the first B-1B delivered to the USAF and is now a gate guard at Dyess...

Not having seen the the F/A-22 or the SR-71 fly(I did get to see an SR-71 a few weeks back at the Smithsonian Air and Space Annex at Dulles) I have seen the others and I watched a group of Bones taking off for a war game sortie at Eilsen AFB in Fairbanks AK. We were at least half a mile off the runway and it shook the ground when it hit the ABs. Very impressive. The BONE gets my vote.

Not in decibels, but I once saw one blast off, and it was very loud. It had four J-79s, which is what two F-4s have. So if you have heard two F-4s flying formation in afterburner, you probably have a pretty good idea of what the B-58 was like.

A Harrier hovering nearby is harder on the ears. With the Harrier, your ears get overloaded by compressor screech, whereas the B-58 was mainly jet exhaust roar which shakes your body. I left my ears uncovered for the B-58, because I wanted to experience it, but couldn't bear to do the same for the Harrier. Partly that was due to the fact that the B-58 didn't spend so much time nearby as a hovering Harrier.

Hmmm....I did find out that the loudest noise in sports was recorded at Rupp Arena, 138 decibles.

I've heard that the Tu-95 is the loudest aircraft still flying. I know a hovering Harrier is damn loud, but I don't remember the SR-71 being quite as loud. Can't remember the Bone (it's been a few years since I've been to a major airshow with B-1s present).

The XF-84H Thunderjet (how apt, and yet nicknamed Thunderscreech) was probably the world's loudest aircraft.

Oh, pleeeeease! The T-37 is not loud at all! A DC-9 at idle would top a Tweety on full power!

The simple answer to this Q is the SR-71 - nothing apart from the TU-22 Blinder has ever come close for me - I used to frequent RAF Mildenhall and several times saw Blackbirds depart. Trust me, there is NOTHING like it - even Concorde pails in comparison!

I was standing behind a SR-71 at OSH one year at the airshow and I have to say it was THE loudest ear damaging plane I have ever heard. It's such a shame its virtually impossible to see one takeoff today

Concorde is Quiet Compared to the SLED I know as I used to visit Mildenhall when the Sled was a Based machine with Detachment 4 9th SRW!

The next Loudest machines on the base at the time were the KC-135Q with Water injection on take off!

Followed buy the C-5 Galaxy that old Bird Screams on depature!

Why is the F-22 on this list? It wsa designed from the ground up to be nearly silent. My guess is the SR-71.

SR-71 out of the 4 choices but loudest I've heard is

Mig-25....with the Mig-23 coming in a close second. And the Tu-95 isn't that loud. Look at an An-22 video on www.flightlevel350.com and you'll basically hear a Tu-95. Same engines..

Actually the loudest ever probably would be the XB-70 for a jet engined AC. I have read that the XF-84H was so loud that people close to it including the pilot would get sick and vomit.

The B-1B is definitely the loudest of the bunch. I have seen the SR-71 fly and it was definitely a dissapointment as far as noise goes. An F-14B or D in burner is a lot louder.

Having heard them all except for the SR-71... The B-1 is by far the loudest. I always thought F-15's would be louder than the F-22, but surprisingly they are equal at the least.

Off orig. topic:

Interesting info about the XF-84H

There was another problem with the XF-84H. Even at idle, the outer tips of the small propeller were traveling faster than the speed of sound, so they made a horrendous racket. It was the loudest plane ever built. There was no chance of secret testing.

The Thunderjet was so loud that it could be easily heard about 35 kilometres away. On one occasion, they powered up the engines of the XF-84H on a runway, while what they thought was an empty C-47 transport plane was parked on a nearby runway. This C-47 was side-on to the propeller of the XF-84H, where the noise was loudest. When they shut down the engine, they heard banging noises from the C-47. An engineer had been doing maintenance inside, and the incredibly loud banshee-like noise had thrown him into an epileptic fit. The banging noise was the flailing of his limbs. And yes, he did recover after a few days.

OK, the point of this thread is the loudest military aircraft....but what the hell, my vote for the Wierdest noise profile for any jet is the B-2. I live a few miles from Whiteman AFB, and B-2s regularly fly very low and slow over my house. If I happen to be standing around outside and spot that weird, narrow black line on the horrizon, I can't hear it AT ALL, untill it's past over my head, after which there is a MOMENT of blazing jet shriek, followed by a sudden change to an omnipresent rumble. The net effect is that B-2s manage their noise signature such that I can only assume direction of the noise if it's right above me. Otherwise it's utterly silent, or omnipresent. If I weren't living in middle-of nowhere white bread America, such a constant, nondirectional rumble would be terrifying.

How about 4 F4's in afterburner-maybe 100' overhead.....that was loud.

Maybe 1969 ish, I attended my first air show. The Reno air races. Didn't know what to expect from some group called the Thunderbirds. I'm sitting on the top row of the grandstands, looking over the ramp area trying to spot them. Four of them overflew us from behind the grandstand, pitched straight up in afterburner. Sitting there slack jawed.....looking straight up...when the solo comes in from behind even lower, and goes vertical to chase the group. The noise was deafening.

This was way before all the safety protocols now in place at air shows.
