If You Could Tour Any Base.

If you could be given the grand tour of any military airbase which one would it be? I would pick Fairchild or McConnell because I am a KC-135 nut. Edwards would be great because of all of the interesting aircraft based there.

I think most bases you at least have a general idea of what you will find/see there. The intrigue of Area 51 makes this a no brainer for me. I would absolutely not expect to see a UFO, but they've got to have the most interesting cutting edge stuff there is to see.

Several bases are well ahead of Area 51 on my list. Id love to get access to the Japanese F-4 bases!

Very true. It would probably be the only place to see a Mig-29/Su-27 in the US...

They may have a couple of those at Nellis. I know as of last year, they were still operating Hind's out of Nellis.

I don't think they live there, they may operate and refuel @ Nellis, but I think they live at another location. Many of the Army's Hinds/Hips came from Ft. Polk, and spend time out west training and turning heads. A hind is an impressive aircraft to see, regardless of your feelings.

I understand, the closed US portion of Red Flag involve these aircraft that operate out of Groom Lake for realistic threat simulation.

For the purpose of seeing many differnet aircraft and a very busy TAC base.

Davis Monthan AFB Tucson Az

Aircraft we see daily:

A-10 , EC-130, F-16 , KC-10,KC-135 ,MH-60,UH-60,AH-64

Due to storage we see alot of different aircraft come in:
B-1B , C-5 , C-130 , F-16 , F-14 , F-15

I personnaly would like to tour any active Israeli airforce base ,

Groom Lake Facility, without a doubt. I would walk around and be like, "lets look in here, or open that hangar".

I would love to land on that long runway, brakes no way just let her coast to a stop.

Sorry, I was pressed for time when I posted that. Well let's see, where to begin. My profession in the Air Force had me at Indian Springs AAF and out on the ranges for training a lot. As you look out at the ranges from Indian Springs, 51 is over the mountains slightly off to the left. Many times we would see lights moving and then suddenly change direction. Other times it appeared that some lights were moving at incredible speeds. Now if you ever drive out on the highway by ISAAF, don't confuse aircraft dropping flares for what I'm talking about. Seen plenty of that too...along with several hinds and migs operating out over the ranges.

If not Area 51--MacDill AFB here in Tampa. Central Command, and Special Operations Command..a lot of spooky things going on there. Had a tour years ago....but that was before things got really "interesting."

Oh yeah, great base, too much to see. Patrick isn't bad as it has lots of different, inetresting stuff transitting thru and 2ndlight usually has waves and the Rocket Ranch has to on anyone's list. The little known USAF museum on Capeside has maybe the best display of early missiles, including a Navaho, and you get to see the actual pad where John Glenn lifted off. Edwards most definitely has to be on the list with Area 51, Dryden FTC, and Mojave all right there. But maybe Zhukovsky or Monino might be it for me right now, never having been to either, and the mystique of the old Iron Curtain days being what it was.

Hah, I had a good time being stationed at DM. You're right, plenty of aircraft to see on a daily basis, and a few surprises here and there like C-5B's swallowing up other C-5's tails and whatnot. And its just about the only base you'll see the EC-130 in all its ugly glory!

...TAC, wow, I haven't heard that one in a while! It's now ACC (Air Combat Command) I saw a few TAC patches at a dry cleaners a while ago, I should have grabed them when I had the chance! Smile

Those are quite a bit to the east of Nevada. I am unable to say where though the location is rather well known.

I've seen a MiG-23 and MiG-29 at Tyndall AFB, FL. Granted they weren't flightworthy but they were the genuine article.

Personally Edwards is the base I want to see... NASA, all armed forces plus the experimental.. coolest base on Earth if you ask me.

Not really surprising since the US bought SU and MIG aircraft years ago. Of course if you follow the link after this statement: "Here we have the SU27 with N105TB chasing it (April 2003)"...it obviously shows a Mig-29 not a SU-27.

Actually its very easy to tell that its a Mig-29. Shape dictates that it cannot be a F-15.

My choice would be something different - the excellent tour of Albanian airforce bases: Kucove, Tirana, Farke, Gjader... F-somethings are all very nice (I can still remember the hype when I first saw them at LeBourget), but MiG-15s, -17s, early -21s and their Chinese copies - some airworthy - are something you won't see anywhere else today... check out Chris Lofting's pics in the db, I think they were taken on the Ian Allan aviation tour in 2006.
