I thought everyone lost intrest in the space programme, I mean we never hear of launches over here (unless something goes slightly wrong in which case watch out for the breaking news banner...).

The launch has been delayed until Saturday at 20:47 EST.

I've been reading about the new space programme (Ares 1 & Orion) and its very intresting but I seem to think we've seen those designs before. I love the shuttle it was the first "aircraft" I fell in love with but it is not as good as the older style Mercury & new Orion modules.

Still at least they will be continuing on to 2008-2010 at least.

It's a fantastic looking bird, alright. I was there for Columbia's first launch, (I grew up in FLA), and it had a profound effect on me, even if it is little more than an airtight pickup truck...

Which leads me to the point;

Quote:
Why can't they just hop in and go?

'Cause Billy-Rae found a loose nut on the gun rack, and one of the Mission Specialists has noticed that "there ain't no way that's seven days' worth of corn pone in the Coleman".

On the other hand, it's not true that before Star Trek fans got their way in the naming of Enterprise, NASA were going to call her "Betty Lou".

Heck, you had more contact than I did I reckon. I was living in Ft. Lauderdale. Took a trip up to Kennedy for the launch. It sounded like the world's largest strip of Velcro(tm) being torn apart, being played through the Rolling Stones' sound system. It was awesome. Words can't describe it, and nor can video, really.

You have. Almost. The plan for another moon shot in 2020 is to use the same approach as the Apollo missions (earth orbit rendezvous, free return trajectory, then lunar orbit rendevouz) except the difference this time will be that the spacecraft will be launched in two phases and then 'latched together' during the earth orbit rendezvouz, and also the returning capsule will have an earth landing (like the Russian Soyuz capsules) instead of an ocean splashdown.

The biggest difference, of course, is that today we don't need a huge Saturn V booster to launch the entire spacecraft. I like the two-phase approach as it allows for a much less complicated launch vehicle and payload configuration. I am quite excited to see what design they come up with, though, for the lunar lander, and how it compares to the Apollo LEM.

Do you know what the absolute saddest part about this Space Shuttle mission is? The reason why the launch window closes on the 18th is that NASA is not sure that the Shuttle's computers could handle a year end roll over while in space. That's right, the US space agency still has a Y2K problem!

What an absolute waste of money and lives the STS program has been.

I dont think thats the reason. the ISS is up there isn't? The STS program has not been a waste. It has been very sucessful, yes there was/are problems however there always is. With your thinking, might have just stayed in Europe instead of looking for a new world.

Something I don't get is they have a multi billion dollar space program with all the technology yet they have to wait for a few clouds to get out of the way?? If only launching space ships are as easy as they are in Star Wars.

Hey don't get me wrong. I'm all for a fully funded space program. I love space exploration and think that we need to spend more NOT less on it. But the shuttle program is literally 40 year old technology. It was 20 year old technology when it first launched. It was built by the lowest cost bidder and never achieved any of the goals that it was supposed to. Unfortunately, 14 astronauts have lost their lives because all of this.

I'm against the Shuttle Program not against NASA or space exploration.

Doesn't sound like a "Y2K" problem, but a "new year" problem thats been there since day 1 and someone is hyping it up. Got to love the 70's tech though, still working after all these years. I remember the computers we had onboard ship(AN/YUK-20's). 64k memory, punch tape loaded, iron-core memory. IIRC the shuttle uses about the same.

8 minutes to go now.

I was reading on the NASA website and realized they have an alternative abort landing site in Spain. That's far from Florida! The place is called Moron btw lol.

8:29 p.m. - Houston has contacted Discovery to advise the crew that all three transatlantic abort landing sites are go, but they will go with Moron, Spain as the preferred site.
