Loudest Military Aircraft?

Sat Feb 03, 2007 8:43 am

What in your opinion is the loudest military aircraft out there? My top five in no particular order are

  • T-37
  • F-18E/F
  • EA-6B
  • B-1B
  • F-4

I'm sure others will disagree though.

I would have to say the tweet or the phantom. The tweet has that high pitched whine, while the F-4 just turns jet fuel into loud thundering noise.

I've never heard one personally, not old enough. I just know from stories that they are loud as hell. Other than that B-1's and F-18's are loud to.

f-18s aren't that loud. a good pair of ear plugs is enough to stand near one without too much discomfort. you'll need plugs and muffs if you ever want to do a hot fuel on one.

While I was on Diego Garcia I got to witness some of the loudest I've even seen/heard- B52/B1/B2, as well as one other I can't talk about- 'cuz it wasn't there~ and I never saw it...

Seaching a.net photos will find a nice picture of the runway there.
(having trouble posting it, but I know it's photo id# is 0665277)
The hanger I 'worked' in was at the Navy end of the runway- just out of said shot to the left.
I recall just before I left that a 'survey' was being done in our hanger, and the B1B hit well over 135 dBs. There may be others out there just as loud (AV8, SR-71, EA6B maybe???) but when you're there in that old @$$ hanger you just wonder if it's going to come crashing down with all that noise!!!!

I believe the B2 was just as loud, but it was not there while the survey was going on...

Believe it or not, but the U-2 is one of the loudest military aircraft I've ever heard. I don't know if it's louder than a B-1 in full burner, but it's darn close...

I started a thread like this last year..... I believe someone told me my ears were wrong and that the F-16 was louder then the FA-18 . I personally cannot tell, all I know is both are extremely loud. I also found the F-22 Raptor at the Toronto Airshow in 2006 MUCH louder then the CF-18, and the FA/18F and the F-16/F15 which showed up. The B1B was definately loud but I personally found the raptor unbearable.

Unless you have been under an SR-71 with its J-58's running, replacing a broken nutplate on the starter panel, you don't know what LOUD is. Its Buick powered start carts were louder than the majority of the military aircraft in use at the time.

Sure the F-16, Harrier, F/A-18, Mig-29 and F-15 are loud but those are just "average" loud, any aircraft with afterburner will be loud. I think the loudest have to be absolutely unbearable in which case I classify "loud" as two different things. There is loud where it just makes everything shake and there is loud where the frequency of the sound(particularly from the compressor) is extremely unbearable while the exhaust noise itself isn't that bad.

So here is my list(no particular order, still flying):

1. SR-71(for obvious reasons) http://www.flightlevel350.com/aviation_video.php?id=3299
2. Mig-25(this one puts the B-1B to shame): http://www.flightlevel350.com/aviation_video.php?id=4427
3. B-1B: http://www.flightlevel350.com/aviation_video.php?id=7569
4. B-52: both the water wagons and the JT-3D powered ones are quite loud. The turbofan version is really not super loud but the screech it makes is quite unbearable. Same with KC-135.
5. Mig-31
6. F-14(I think these were the loudest of any F series fighters currently in service)
7. Mig-23BN with the R-29 engine.

And here is a list of aircraft I would think are the loudest but I really don't know since they flew well before my time:

1. B-52 with water injection
2. B-58
3. Tu-22
4. Handley Page Victor
5. XB-70/Sukhoi T-4
6. F-104

I think the 4x J79s with after burners combined with the small wing / high MTOW must have really shook up things around the AFB bases in the fifties/sixties.. well everyone was afraid for the reds then, these days it probably wouldn't be accepted anymore.

1. B-52 with water injection
2. B-58
3. Tu-22
4. Handley Page Victor
5. XB-70/Sukhoi T-4
6. F-104

The KC-135A with water injection was a lot louder than the B-52B-G with water. The J-57 equipped B-52s had sound baffles in the tail pipes, the KC-135 did not.

Along with the TU-22, I would add the TU-95.

The F-101s and F-4s were just as loud, if not louder than the F-104

I was thinking about adding the F-101 or maybe the "delta" fighters but I don't know too much about them to judge. Agreed with the F-4.

About the Tu-95...while I have never seen one in person...there are many videos of it and the An-22 floating around and they just don't seem that loud, after all they are turboprops. They just make this awkward propeller noise. But I suppose I'll have to see one before I can really say.

That is true. But, the exemption remains. Why, because the governments make the rules, and they own the military, thus they exempt themselves so they don't have to spend the money. Politicians are cool, aren't they?

In the US, the F-100, F-101, F-102, F-104, F-105, F-106, and F-4 (original USAF designation was the F-110) are all referred to as the "century series fighters". They were all very loud, having AB versions of the J-57 and J-79 engines. It is of note, the F-111 was not included as a century series. The F-111 and F-14 had the same engine (different versions), but the F-111 was never as loud as the F-14.

The counter-rotating turboprops of the TU-95 are very loud, and you are right, they make a very unusual sound. I have heard the TU-95, on the ground and inflight (I was in a KC-135, not the Bear). The TU-95 is almost as big as a B-52, and it is just as impressive. I believe it is louder than the water wagon B-52B-Gs.

In my experience nothing comes close to the sound intensity of the Harrier in hover mode nearby. Beyond that and the B-1 in afterburner the US fighters are all roughly in the same zone. I can't speak for the F-22 as I've only seen that do pretty much idle power flybys.

From what I've read or heard, the supersonic or nearly supersonic tips of the Bears counterrotating props, the KC-135 water injected and the Blackbird would go on my list based on hearsay. Oh, and the Pogo Stick and its compatriot XFY-1 (or XFV-1).

I'll take your word for it, although I guess I would have to see one to believe it. I just can't hear it as that loud on any of the videos I have. Again, I think the B-52s had more of the "thundering/roar" loud whereas the Tu-95 seems to have an awkward/unbearable frequency of sound loud. Two different types of loud in my opinion. It certainly is not the type of loud a B-1B or F-14 makes. You know what I mean?

If the F-4 is included the Su-37 should be included as well. I've seen both on the same airshow and I would say the Su-37 was probably louder than the Phantom II.

The Vulcan was indeed very loud.

F16s and Harriers too - and the Tornado is no slouch, but the Bone at full reheat departure is a different ballpark. B52, Tu95, KC135, Victor, VC10 ect - got nothing on the bone i'm afraid.

I have heard stories of F-4 pilots "escorting" Tu-95s being able to not only hear the Bear inside their own cockpit, but due to the noise, actually vomit. Additionally, apparently submarine crews are able to pick up Tu-95s that fly over via sonar.

This incredible noise level is due to the enormus contra-rotating prop tips... which cause impact of the various sonic booms / pressure waves.

The Tu-95's noise is simply in a class of its own....

The loudest (or at least most accoustically annoying) aircraft I ran into in my 20+ years on military airfields were in no particular order:

C-5
U-2
KC-135A
T-37

I always kept my foamies and ear defenders handy. Paid off because I was one of the rare troops whose hearing was better when I left the military than when I joined.

My thought? Either the Thunderscreech, or the XB-70 Valkyrie.

The J-93's were the loudest turbojet on earth (at the time at least), and six of them are housed in the Valkyrie

After being on the flight deck with an F/A 18 E/F, I can say they are loud, but I was not that impress. Now you do need good hear protection when dealing with an Super hornet. To bad they did not ask what the best sounding aircraft, because an S-3 eventhough it is not as loud as a F/A 18, the deep noise it make before powering up is great.

I wonder how loud the Myasischev M-4 bomber was, it had four pure turbojets(AM-3). The Tu-104 had two of them and I heard it was pretty loud. I can only imagine 4, probably close to the KC-135As...

IMO Vulcan on full power, (heard at RAF Locking in 1974?). Noise as a solid force.

Harrier on VT, it is earsplitting and the volume simply keeps going up.

It flew military missions and some consider it to be a plane so I would bring the Space Shuttle into the list, that thing is beyond loud, but in all fairness I have to say it's nice and quiet on return. Big grin

Loudest thing I ever heard was the Viggen landing very short with no flare, turning back and around immediately with reverse thrust and taking of in the opposite direction again (Koksijde AB), probably felt real loud due to me being so close.
Also I heard stories about the Backfire being extremely loud, even its APU is very noisy.

What in your opinion is the loudest military aircraft out there? My top five in no particular order are

I'd have to say either a Hornet or a Prowler. I guess my opinion is formed because I used to watch them land from the foul line on a flight deck. When they catch the wire and go to max power, you're brains rattle. However, the B-1B was super loud to when I saw that takeoff, but I was not nearly as close.

While technically this is not an aircraft:

Quote:

Engineers at NASA claim to have made the loudest noise ever: of 210 decibels. This is so loud that it can make holes in solid materials.

I've heard the B-1, Harrier, etc, but if an aircraft ever had something that loud of what was quoted above on it...OUCHY....

I was impressed by the noise of the A-6 Intruder. They'd occasionally come to Elizabeth City, NC from NAS Oceana for pattern work when I was AD school in the Coast Guard. Even taxiing, they were noisy.
