Aussie Army Farewells UH-1

Thu Sep 27, 2007 9:11 pm

After nearly 45 years of service the Australian Army has flown it's last operational mission with the UH-1H Iroquois.

From Australian Aviation magazine-
GOODBYE IROQUOIS: The Australian Army retired its final UH-1 Iroquois helicopters from service on September 23 following the type's 45 year service career within all three branches of the ADF.

Following a public farewell flight over Brisbane by three aircraft on September 21, the final Army operational or training mission was flown two days later when an Iroquois from Oakey visited a Toowoomba school. The last ever ADF Iroquois flight is expected to be undertaken by ARDU's example in December.

The Iroquois first entered service in UH-1B form with the RAAF in 1962, and has also served with the Navy in limited numbers. The Army became the sole operator Iroquois operator in 1989 following the transfer of all RAAF UH-1H aircraft to Army and the withdrawal of the type from Navy service.

”The ‘Huey' has been a part of the Australian Defence Force for 45 years and, in that time, it has been a part of life for so many people, both in the services and the general public,” Brigadier Nick Bartels, Commander of Army's 16th Brigade (Aviation) said. “From it being involved in search and rescues at sea and on land, fighting bush fires and carrying relief supplies in floods and drought, to aiding the villagers in isolated Aceh communities after the tsunami disaster in Sumatra, the Huey will live on in the hearts of those who have been helped long after today.”

The utility capability provided by the Iroquois will be partly replaced by the MRH-90, the first of which is due to enter service later this year.

‘Australian Aviation's' Paul Sadler attended Sunday's final flight and will post a blog report on our website - www.ausaviation.com.au/blog - later this week.

Cheers

Yes blackhawks and the army will be getting I think 36 MRH-90 in the next few years. The first few are being assembled and in testing right now and should be released to the army sometime early next year. Will be a nice filler between the blackhawk and the Chinook and because they're marinized from the start will be able to operate from our Amphibs with no restrictions.
