And The Latest Member To The Flanker Camp Is....

Tue Nov 06, 2007 1:19 pm

The 1st of Algeria's 28 Su-30MKA's is seen testing in Russia:

It is near the Su-30MKI level, minus the Israeli equipment, and utilizing more French components (notably Thales; Thales Damocles LDP/TGP pod for example). Algeria is also receiving 70 MiG-29SMTs.

Nice...

I like the grainy, cold-war style photos.

That's a very capable airplane for Algeria. Did they get it at a somewhat reduced price? Will they be able to afford to support it in the long term?

So, is this already a brand-new frame and not remanufactured like the rejected MiG-29SMTs?

If confirmed, Morocco could indeed use new Block 52C/Ds, and might want to upgrade their order in light of the above.....

I think something heavier would be more appropriate.

Well, the Super Bug may not have stellar aerodynamic abilities, but if much of the battle would be at stand-off ranges and Morocco's budget could stretch that little bit more, its excellent electronics and extensive weapons load make it a good option.

Would the US sell Morocco the F/A-18E? I recall the DoD refusing a request for second-hand F-16s on account that they may be used against the Polisaro rebels.

In case you didn't notice the last part of the excerpt in Reply 4, the US just sold them second-hand F-16s, so that pretty much make that concern moot. Anyway, it's highly doubtful that second hand F-16s (or used F/A-18s for that matter) would be any less lethal than brand-new ones against the rebels.
