67-3268

Mon Jan 21, 2008 7:08 pm

I am trying to identify a dark gray T-38 I photographed at the Battle Creek Balloon Festival in July 1983. The serial number painted on the tail is 67-3268. It has a GF tail code making me think it was part of the ACE program. The painted serial does not match any I can find. I have checked the 67 fiscal year and the last four but have not matches. Any help appreciated.

64-13268 is a T-38, could that be it?

Per Joe Baugher's website...67-3268 was assigned to a Martin Bullpup missile.
Is it possible to post the photograph of the T-38 here?
I'll help in any way I can. Regards.

I will try to find a way to get it linked. I looked at Joe Baugher's site and Military Serials of North America. Had it been an F-5, that would have shown up in the production lists. If anyone can host the image, please email me and I will send it. The serial is legible with the small AF over 67 then large 3268 numbers. Code is GF which I take to mean it is assigned to the ACE program at the 319th, Grand Forks AFB.

Thanks for the help

If you plug "268" and "T-38" into this site that searches Joe Baugher's serial number lists, the only thing it finds as a possible serial number is 64-13268: http://users.rcn.com/jeremy.k/serialSearch.html

There is an outside chance it could be that one. 64-13268 was assigned to the 9 RW at Beale AFB in 1999 so it may have been in the ACE program at Grand Forks prior to that. It may be a civilian owned Talon with a bogus serial number. I am now trying that route.

Thanks to Moose135 for helping me overcome my technical shortfall and get an image hosted.

This was taken at Battle Creek in July 1993. I was there with the Birmingham RF-4C in the background with my future ex-wife coming over from Detroit. I didn't pay that much attention to the details not realizing I would be perplexed 15 years later trying to keep my photo records accurate.

In full USAF markings, without a N number? Wouldn't that be illegal?

I'd look no further than a mispaint.

Or send the photo to Joe Baugher, he might take an interest.

This is indeed T-38A 64-13268, NOT 67-

There is a close up of the tail (incorrectly marked and noted as such) in Don Logan's fine Northrop's T-38 Talon book by Schiffer on page 124.

Moose! Thanks for hosting this photo.

Case closed I suppose.

Slightly off-topic, can anyone explain why it is hat the USAF and US Army leave out digits in the presentation of serials numbers on their aircraft (sometimes the first (decade) digit, sometimes the first one afer the fiscal year)? I can't think of what purpose this might serve.

By omitting or eliding a digit the serial number can be displayed in a standard-sized area with constant-sized numerals. If the size of the area can only accommodate 4 digits (i.e., 61-2345) then something has to go for serials that are longer (i.e., 61-23456, which would appear as 61-3456, eliding the 2).

Slightly off-topic here, and a bit of USAAF's serial number trivia from WW2...
The highest serial number ever assigned to an aircraft was 42-110188, assigned
to a Consolidated B-24J Liberator. No idea how they displayed that number on
the twin tails.
Regards.
