1st April 2008 marks 90 years since the Army Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service merged, to create the world's first truly independent air arm.
As you might expect this event will be marked, including a flypast over London;

Three days ago, the last surviving RNAS/RAF (and I think British WW1) veteran, 111 year old Henry Allingham, was invited as a guest at the announcement of the events to mark this anniversary.

It will be a major feature of the Air Tattoo this summer, (though actual numbers of aircraft could be affected by the service being so heavily deployed on operations, in other words, delivering what the taxpayer funds).

Also due to take part are the RAF RED ARROWS and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight but which aircraft apart from a Spitfire thats said to be operating out of RAF Brize Norton is un-known.

I guess we should be gracious and not carp that it was a bloody awful decision, shouldn't we?

I don't blame them for this in 1918, who really knew what the potential of sea based air power was then, aside from observation.
Certainly not the Admirals, they were probably glad to be shot of worrying too much about these little, frail aircraft, what were they compared to a broadside from a Battleship?
But by the early/mid 1930's, policy should have changed, should have changed when the RN started planning and building purpose built carriers at this time, the first to do so in fact.
As well as naval aviation technology becoming more reliable and potent, able to do stuff like dive bomb and carry torpedo's over increasing distances.

A little bit harsh, actually. Do remember that the RN was the world leader in naval aviation at the time. That they regressed dramatically from the moment they lost control of their aviation branch is hardly surprising. Given the RAF's refusal to hand over any degree of autonomy to the navy it is hardly surprising that innovation ossified and the navy concentrated on battleships.

In all seriousness, well done to the RAF, they provide an invaluable support to the troops out on the front line and keep the supplies coming, they're also good for providing squaddies with someone to blame everything on when they have to go by four tonner to a training exercise instead of a Chinook

The decision taken then was an expedient that had unforeseen consequences, fortunately the RN was ultimately permitted a degree of air power with the Fleet Air Arm.
Jon Lake has written an excellent two-part critique of the RAF and MoD that have appeared in the past two issues of "AIR International" -- recommended to all. Suffice to say Mr Lake is not a fan of the Whitehall types in MoD.
That said, congratulations to the RAF on reaching 90. Per ardua ad astra.

I was harsh about the Admirals, but I don't blame them, at least until the potential of aviation became clearer, Billy Mitchell's demostration in the 1920's should have concertrated minds beyond the Admiralty though.
The RAF, due to it's history, is quite unusual in doing maritime patrolo-most others let the Navy do it, as well as support helicopters, with most Army air arms do.
However, there is no case for changing this now, the armed forces have had quite enough 're-structuring'.
If they are sometimes found wanting in say, support helicopter provision, it's down to having too few, as Flight International reported-about both Army and RAF choppers, in 1986!

A second RAF Flypast will be heading East to West up the River Thames to be at the London Eye(Big Wheel) by 1PM local time on April the 1st.

We had about 10 or so (maybe more) jets (not the red arrows) flying in formation very low and slow over Maidenhead, nr Windsor at about 18:50 tonight.

The 10+ actualey 11 Typhoons were going to The RAF Museum Hendon for aFlypast being held as a Large Slap up Dinner was being held at the museum to Celebrate the RAF 90th Anniversery.

argh! .. lol .. i went to chelsea bridge , WITH my camcorder hoping to get a brilliant view of the red arrows and the MIGHTY typhoons .. unfortunatly the thames is like a curly wirly lol and i didnt get a very good view, but still , it was nice seeing my two most favorite RAF aircraft !
