Two E-6Bs @ SYD

Tue Mar 25, 2008 2:02 am

I recently saw not one but two USN E-6Bs at Sydney Airport- one was parked in the biz jet apron, then it and and the E-6B were moved to a point beyond the Qantas maintenance hangars. That's were I saw them on the 15th of March.

Does anyone know what would bring two of these birds to Sydney?

It's very rare to see them in Australia, much less two of them.

Anyone know why?

Believe they came from Diego Garcia on the 13th, I managed to get the 2nd one landing on 07. They both departed to Hickam on the 15th, I am told between 1230 and 1300 local time.

Why were they here ?? Who cares, they looked great.

In all seriousness, they had probably been deployed at Diego Garcia and SYD was the lucky port picked for the transit back to Hickham. It is the third time I have seen them in SYD, though never two together.

A little clarity: USN EA-6B Prowler, or USN E-6 Mercury (707 derivative)?

Do the E-6's do alot of overseas operations, because I thought they were CONUS based?

They handle communications with the submarine fleet, don't they? I'd be surprised if there weren't a few subs in the Indian Ocean and/or Persian Gulf right now.
