Leasing A Military Transport?

On one of the threads in civ-av, someone suggested that Raytheon, a major defense contractor, is leasing C-5s for transport. Is it true? Under what circumstances will the USAF transport contractor supplies?

Leasing military airplanes is not unheard of. PW leased a B-52C for many years to flight test the JT-9D, then the PW-4000 series. Years ago, CFM International leased one of the YC-15s to flight test the CFM-56 engine. NASA "leased" two different KC-135As, at different times to use as the Vomet Comet, now they lease a USN C-9B. F-4s, F-14s, F-15s, F-16s, F/A-18s have all been leased.

Then the FAA would have to issue L-500 type certificates to the civilian pilots, which is not currently a valid type rating listed in the AC, which would be cool because then I could add another type to my ticket!

Since there is no cilivan counterpart that was certified by the FAA, the type rating would be heavy military transport, multi-engine.

In fact, they have the majority of the manufactured airframes, and it's even included in Flightglobal's Military Aircraft Directory.....

.....so, last year's news about the Russian Air Force leasing out some of their An-124s from the total of 56 frames produced, might come to pass instead.

Of course they were designed for the military, but I was talking about Antonov Airlines, Polet and Volga-Dnepr. These are civil companies that own their aircraft.

The caption on the last two pictures seems strange to me. I'm not doubting that the Russian Air Force operated commercial flights with their An-124s, but if they still do, the number of those charters is negligible compared to the civil operators.

The last quote you provide says it all:

"Several operators of the Antonov An-124 outsize freighters are expected to line up to acquire more of the type from the Russian military as it prepares to dispose of its An-124 fleet."
