Rather than wade through Google's "transliteration", see the press releases from NATO and Boeing here.....

This is great news and hopefully more will follow one day. Strategic airlift is badly needed in Europe and it's the kind of thing that would work very well under a shared regime within NATO, in the same spirit as the AWACS fleet.

Are these 3 airplanes (two new builds) an initial order? I would think these 12 nations would need a minimum of 6 C-17s.

I hope Germany would join, the A400 is getting late, the C160s old and tired and the leased An 124s are not good for every mission.

Actually I think the third one is a new build, just part of the USAF order.

The pain of this purchase was so intense that this will probably be it for the C-17. I believe they are planning on additional in the A400M/C-130/C-27 ranges in the future. The line of reasoning is the USAF/private airlines will furnish all of the NATO required strategic lift.

Hopefully other European countries will be able to buy time on these aircraft in due course; I know that the Irish Defence Forces have a need for a transport aircraft, but in these present times of budgetary constraints, that's unlikely to happen; it would probably make a lot more sense if we could buy a certain amount of time on the NATO aircraft.

Are these the same aircraft that will be based in Hungary (Keczemet, I think?)

Yes, these aircraft will be based in Hungary.

The overall purchase of these aircraft is a little unusual. I don't have the information in front of me. But I think that NATO will purchase 3 NEW C-17s and the USAF will provide them with a brand NEW 4th C-17 down the line.

Good to see some extra life provided to the C-17 line. Boeing and other countries have been creative in keeping this aircraft in production.
