VC10 In MSP Right Now

Sat Oct 18, 2008 8:26 pm

Ok so was taking a walk around Lake Nokomis and next thing you know I hear this strange engine noise - look up and see some sort of odd military plane...anyone know why it's here? It said Royal Air Force on the side but I couldn't see any country markings.

If it said Royal Air Force, it is likely an L-1011. The UK's RAF frequently makes fuel stops at MSP. Did it look like this?

Royal Air Force is the airforce of Great Britain, the plane you saw was probably a Vickers VC-10 built by the british aircraft manufacturer Vickers-Armstrong

I've got a pic but not sure how to upload...can I send to either of you? For sure it was not an L1011....it could be a VC10....

The VC-10 was actually designed and manufactured by the Brits, as one of the previous posters just pointed out. Its no longer in production, but still in operation for the RAF as a tanker. Here is the link to the wikipedia article with some basic background.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers_VC10

and photos from an air show here on a-net.

https://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...657&searchid=79834&s=vc-10#ID79834

I am sure there is another a-net enthusiast who can provide more details on the VC-10.

However, its understandable you would think its Russian, since the Russians produced a similar-looking design, the IL-62. Like the VC-10, they have been out of production for some time and do not appear widely flown anymore. Cubana and Air Koryo are two airlines that I recall that still fly them, although there may be others. However, I don't think they are flown to any U.S destinations. I recall someone posted a trip report on the IL-62 here on A-net. Here it is...

https://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...0&searchid=109256&s=il-62#ID109256

Hope that helps.

I believe i have seen those there before. I'm almost positive that there was one sitting out by the NWA maintenance on 494 about a year or so ago.

The VC-10s are based at Brize Norton, the RAF base about 90 miles west of London which is the home base of the RAF tanker and transport fleet, including the L1011 and C-17. Photo links on this page from the base website.

That's where I've seen their L-1011s before.

What brings the RAF to MSP? Even if it's just a technical stop, surely the route being flown by the jolly old Vickers Funbus would be interesting to learn.

What a great spotting opportunity! I'm bummed that I missed it. Long live the VC10!

And yes I know it would come from the UK but is my question really that off base? I don't know if it can fly nonstop....so your response is just kind of rude.

The Royal Air Force brings L-1011s to MSP for fuel stops. Today I saw a C-5 so would that have anything to do with the VC-10 at MSP?

RAF does stop in MSP to clear Customs, refuel, and to spend the night, both coming and going to the UK.

IIRC they go to RED Flag outside LAS., or go to Yuma, for training before they go to Iraq.

I had no idea that MSP played a role with any international forces, it's pretty cool. I did see the C17, it had winglets - the C5 does not have winglets.

I think it's awesome that we get international military as well!!

The RAF VC-10 makes occasional stops in ABQ on its way to Nellis in Las Vegas. With the airport being at 5000 feet, it makes a lot of noise and uses up just about all the 13000 ft of runway. But man is that a sweet bird.

Just curious, what is the British RAF doing in Las Vegas?

Probably to do desert training? And do they do a lot of training with the US?

My understanding is that the RAF does a whole lot of training in the US, for several reasons. First, there's the tight relationship between the US and UK governments. They share intelligence, fight wars together regularly, generally back each other up - many refer to it as the 'special relationship'. It's tighter than the relationships between the US and other NATO members. Second, the US has an expansive (and mostly empty) desert that I guess fills in for the Middle East during training, just like the place but much more friendly and familiar. Third, the Nellis ranges where Red Flag exercises take place have an awesome array of training aids and threat simulators which I venture to guess are unrivaled anywhere else in the world.

The place they normally park is near the Humphrey Terminal in view from the top of the parking garage. Morning sun is best. Wish I was in town to see it.
